Why would anyone want a 4 cylinder 2015 Mustang

Lurking and reading all this talk about a 4 cylinder for the Mustang made me signup. Why would anyone who buys a musclecar like the Mustang want a 4 cylinder? Kinda lame to pick a 4 cyl model especially if it has similar HP as the V6. :headbonk:

From a manufacturing standpoint, it's all about CAFE standards.

From a driving standpoint, a 4 cyl turbo will be lighter and can (with the proper suspension/vehicle dynamics tuning) handle better than a v6 or even a v8.

The majority of Mustangs are not muscle cars though, they are pony cars.

I wouldn't buy a 4-cylinder, but if tens of thousands do, and it means I still get to buy a V8, that's fine by me

It's all about, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY! If ford thinks they can sell a 4cyl then they will build a 4cyl. I agree with you, same as why buy a V6 mustang. IMO a mustang should always be a V8, but money talks, LOL.

Confused by your distinction... muscle cars meaning v8s and pony cars = all the rest?

I thought sales wise it's basically the sales # of V8 and V6's?

For me, even a GT isn't really a muscle car.......nor a Boss 302.............but a GT500.....now you're talking.

For me, a pony car has a sporty character..........a muscle car is one dominated by it's engine above all else.

Everyone has their own definition though :)

Depending on where you buy gas, a 4 banger may make sense..
.
Iran @ $ .44 / gal
U.S.A. @ $ 3.51 / gal. ( avg. )
Norway @ $ 9.54 / gal

You can see the progression of state sponsored subsidies in your post.

I don't know why a 4 or 6 cyl bothers V8 owners so much. Guess the thought is that it tarnishes the musclecar image of the car? Like Boydstang says if they can build more models and sell them that's all good for everyone - Ford makes more money from the Mustang which justifies them continuing to make the car and put money into developing even better high end models.

Look at the take rate of the current S197 v6 versus v8 cars. Approx. 57% of the daily build is comprised of v6 cars.

The take rates for v6 (or smaller engine) against v8 for other makes/models are also at least that or even more in favor of v6 (or smaller). The V8 is always going to be enthusiasts' model and never going to be the majority of sales.

What I'm curious to see is what the take rate of the 4 cyl versus the 6 cyl will be for the s550.

Predictions anyone?

The 4 cylinder take rate is going to depend a lot on price and performance. People aren't just going to buy this for better MPG. Look at the SVO, it was priced at a ridiculous 6k premium to the GT. I know it's a different comparison since this shouldn't be a special edition and should only be a little more expensive than the V6, but that's why the SVO was basically a flop sales wise.

Also, my guess is if the 4 cylinder becomes an unexpected hit and becomes 50% of V6 sales, they'll start looking at phasing out the V6.

This may sound crazy but is it impossible that the 4 cylinder could be introduced as a SVT product (branded as SVO as a tribute to the original)?

Not really sure you can compare the SVO and the new S550 EB4 as an apples to apples comparison.

I don't think the EB4 S550 will be a modern day SVO...unfortunately.
