Whats the octane adjuster for in the ford performance software?

In configurations you have octane adjuster and profile learning they are default off what are they for if you turn them on?

If you search this thread for "ping" or "pinging" you'll see posts about issues with fuel. To anyone who had had those issues did the updated tune do anything to resolve that or you still have to use the octane adjust?

Does anyone have a better explanation of the octane adjust then what is provided in the ProCal 3 instructions? What is an engine with increased octane sensitivity?
