Voltage fluctuates quite a bit. Is this normal?

Just noticed this the last day or two. Watching the voltage reading, it moves around quite a bit. Virtually every car I've owned when running parks you at about 14.4 volts and stays there.

My Mustang at first startup, will be around that, sometimes going up to 14.6. But it then settles down to about 13v. I've seen it as low as 12.6, but it will fluctuate as you drive.

Now, does this come down to an intelligent alternator that only charges when necessary or is this an issue I should be pointing out to the dealer?

Intelligent charging strategy, which is called "Smart Charge". This has been on Ford vehicles for approximately 10 years. Essentially, it only charges when necessary, which reduces parasitic drag, improves fuel economy, and extends the life of the battery and alternator. No need to be alarmed.

Funny, I noticed what I thought was lowish voltage yesterday on my way home from a long drive. Voltage was showing 'only' 12.9, very consistently. I figured, oh great, alternator is failing, but then I figured the car is smart enough to tell me now if that voltage is too low, and figured it must be normal, or at least normal enough to not set a code or MIL.
