First, I did the following only to kill time while waiting for my VIN and build date. Curiousity only - not trying to obtain VINs for devious purposes. Used http://www.cotus.ford.com to verify the VINs and http://www.alton-moore.net/vin_calculation.htm to find the check digit.

VIN breakdown (at least for North America - don't know if other regions will differ):

Digits 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) - "1FA" for the 2015 Mustang
Digits 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) - Breaks down as follows for the 2015 Mustang
4: "6" Ford has used this digit to specify safety equipment in the past - don't expect this digit to change during this model year but it might
5-7: Model
"P8A" - V6 Fastback Coupe
"P8C" - GT Fastback Coupe
"P8E" - V6 Convertible (future)
"P8F" - GT Convertible (future)
"P8R" - LE Fastback Coupe
"P8T" - EB Fastback Coupe
"P8U" - EB Convertible (future)
Need the LE Convertible code
8: Engine
"F" - 5.0L V8
"H" - 2.3L I4 TC
"M" - 3.7L V6
Digit 9: Check digit (North American Standard)
Digits 10-17: Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS)
10: Model Year - "F" for 2015
11: Plant Code - "5" for Flat Rock, Michigan
12-17: Production Number (manufacturer can use this any way they want)
299XXX has been used for preproduction models - some of these show up on COTUS and most or all are built
3XXXXX many of these have been assigned already for production - none built yet, have observed GT and V6 coupes on COTUS but no EB (have observed some EB in ETIS); have seen up to 311000 assigned to date (yes, 11,000)
50XXXX are reserved for the LE model - only 500001-501964 will be used; not showing on COTUS but do show in ETIS

The above should give you enough information to dig around in COTUS.

Some observations in the first 100:

None except for 300001 is assigned to a dealer.
About half are black.
About 8 to 1 GT vs others.
Limited number of colors (only TY, CO, Race Red, Black)
No EB observed on COTUS (but there are gaps that were verified being EB in ETIS)
No LE observed in COTUS (but all assigned can be seen in ETIS)
Very few advanced cruise control orders
No orders with all possible options
Very few have more than a couple options
None have moved past the ordered stage
None show build dates

After looking at the first 100, I skipped around to try and find the upper assigned limit and hit one at 311000. While doing so I noticed most after 300500 or so have dealers assigned to them and a much wider variety of colors and options were ordered. None of the window stickers had a customer name on them either so all appear to be dealer lot cars.

Sounds like they are prepping inventory before custom orders except the LEs as I thought

if you only went up to 311000, then you didn't go up high enough. I'm below 312000 though.

I ain't skeered. :p 1FA6P8CF0F5302572 is my VIN. I ordered on 5/20, but made some changes to my order later on. If they assign VIN's sequentially, then I got in pretty early considering it was late afternoon before I could get my order in that day.

No reason to be scared to post vin. You can get any vin off any car anytime. Nothing tied to it to give personal info and it's illegal for law enforcement to run it and hand that info to just anyone
