Very interesting as to why the replacement engine has the oil cooler adapter in place... If it were me, I’d definitely be questioning the Shop or Dealership that replaced that engine.

Is it a 3.7 or is the replacement a 3.5 from an F150 (is that even possible)?

Was it definitely a brand new engine replacement; because I’m still puzzled as to why then a Tech or Shop would even put the oil cooler adapter plate onto an engine that never had it in the first place??

I'm fairly sure it's actually a 3.7 designed for a Taurus/Explorer Police Interceptor. They have that oil cooler unit but none of the other revisions do. They also have an external water pump just like the Mustang engine. Given that the V6 production specifically for the Mustang has ceased, maybe that's all Ford will ship you now. But yeah, this doesn't strike me as a huge mystery or dealer incompetence. I'm sure you can move the engine back a bit more but it would probably be easier to just find a shorter oil filter with the same thread to get around this issue.
