The mystery of the old conger-eel is that the eel was a representation of the author’s close friend, John Ruskin who was an art critic and a “drawing master” (not drawling) and taught drawing, sketching, and painting in oils.

An extra factoid is that the rare condition, Alice in Wonderland Syndrome effects sensory perception by making objects appear either larger or smaller than the actual size that generally effects children or young adults who eventually “grow out” of their condition with spontaneous remission.
