There is a widely held misconception that Mercedes-Benz was so named because one of the company’s founders Karl Benz had a daughter named Mercedes. He didn’t. Emil Jellinek had a daughter named Mercedes. Emil Jellinek was a tinkerer / race car driver who modified and raced Daimler vehicles. He named one of his modified Daimler vehicles after his daughter. Later, when Daimler and Benz merged, the Mercedes name stuck. Mercedes-Benz.

Thought about this over the weekend when I was visiting Gilmore Car Museum as I was taking this picture of an 1886 Benz, considered to be the world’s first functional automobile (sorry Henry). It was just Benz because Mercedes (person or car) had not happened yet.
