thats...not at all counterintuitive. 1.5x the diameter, since it is an area, you square it, so 2.25x the area. if you go just a little bigger, to 2x the diameter, it is 4x the area, so a 24" pizza would have ALMOST twice as much as the 18", and 4x the 12".
good thing the pizza joints can't do math because they sure do't charge linearly by the in^2. I wouldn't say 'mastered' but rather 'brute force' the problem.And yet computers have mastered both.
