So I have 2015 with the larger screen, I believe it is called the MFT in that year. I would love to be able to add android auto, mainly for maps. Upgrading to the sync 3 just seems complicated and expensive. Is there any good aftermarket options? Being able to add a subwoofer would be a plus as well.

Get a Maestro RR and the Maestro MFT1-kit and any headunit of your choice.
But i strongly recommend a short chassis radio as fitment of normal size headunits is really tight in the cavity.

So those are both just kits to actually use an aftermarket headunit?

Yes, but you need both... the Maestro RR is the actual brain that integrates the headunit into the car and the MFT-1 kit is the wiring adapter, mounting adapter stuff that you need to put the headunit physically into your car.

Make sure you get a headunit with an idatalink port btw., like a Kenwood DMX706s or something similar from Pioneer, Alpine or Sony or others with short chassis headunits and idatalink ports.

Cool thank you for the help. I will have to start looking into headunits. Only thing I really would like is one with a physical volume knob.

Well, with the Maestro RR and MFT1 kit you retain the big knob on the stock panel. Everything stays as it's now, except for the screen which is then your new headunit instead of the Sync2 screen.
So all the buttons on the panel that you have now will work like they are doing now. Left big knob is volume, right big knob is whatever functionality it is now. All freely configurable.

Just watch the following video. It shows the MFT1 in a F150, but you get the idea what that kit does.
It retains all existing knobs that you have now and also retains all their functionality except for a few knobs.

And here's a picture of how a Kenwood DDX9705s looks in the dash with the MFT1 kit.
You can clearly see all the stock buttons, knobs and stuff. :)
