Unsprung Weight

Just a general question regarding unsprung weight. I have a Base GT with the 18" Wheels and garbage 235's. I've upgraded to a set of lighter wheels, but I believe that the 275/40 series tires weigh considerably more than the 235's. Does this negate the weight loss of the rims itself? Is rotational mass affected more by one component or the other? IE, Tires or Rims?

If the wheel and tire you're upgrading to weighs more than what the OE one does than there's no reduction in the unsprung weight.
My Advanti 19x9.5 wheel and 275 tire combination weighed 4 lbs less than the OE 18x8 and 235 tire. The only way to find out is weigh them.

I know my wheels weigh 25 lbs a piece, not sure what the 275's weigh.

Tire rack posts up the tire weight so if you know what you're looking for you can find it there. Most importantly though you'll want to find a lightweight wheel since there's not a ton of variation of weight between tire models (not as drastic as wheels at least). When you pair up a good wheel with that though, you'll want to absolutely make sure that the wheel you're choosing which is lightweight, also is very strong otherwise your investment might not be a long term one.

If I could afford HRE's, I would have easily chosen the FF15 over anything else. I was actually lucky enough to come check you guys out in person when I was living in San Diego. Also just went on Tirerack and found out that my new setup weighs more than the stock one. Thanks for the helpful tip!

I think the 20% off sale that we're having may have you re-consider. I see posts from time to time thinking the price is higher than expected because some see posts about HRE having high prices, but the FlowForm wheels compared to our Forged are considerably less in price.

The most important piece of advice I can give from racing cars for 10+ years myself is that you get what you pay for. If you're looking for quality matched with a lightweight and durable wheel, it's going to cost more than a wheel that might just be light, but at the same time may not be strong at all, and therefore not durable and a safety risk.

i will add i am on a winter package of TSW Brathursts in OEM PP sizes and these suckers are the lightest wheels i have ever picked up. Needforspeed confirmed them at 20lbs and i will tell you this makes a HUGE difference in ride, braking and performance because i compared this to a 20 heavy wheel and tire package its night and day how much better my car feels. i think these Flowforms come in at a nice weight savings. OEM stuff is HEAVY. I have considered going back to 20 for the visual but after seeing how my car feels now i honestly can not do it

Sadly I already purchased and received my wheels/tires, so I will have to live with the added weight. At least the 275's will certainly have better traction.

dont worry unless your on the track or planing to youll be fine, worst case you could do what i did. at my younger stage i could not afford to buy light weight wheels and it cost a arm and a leg to buy anything just to save 5lb per corner so i did the next best thing...... i ran a few miles and lost those 20 pounds my self sorry just wanted to lighten up your day.

Hahaha. I'm actually working on that. San Diego food and beer netted me an additional 30 pounds! So I'm trying to remedy that before the spring hits. I'm still very happy that I chose your wheels, if I really wanted weight savings I would have opted for 18's.
