It’s not for strength. It’s for sound. Plywood will reverberate and flex. MDF won’t and is much more dense. Is also heavier. But in the back of the Mustang probably won’t make a huge difference since you’re not pushing spl.

Actually this has already been proven incorrect. MDF is inferior, it is weaker and even sags under its own weight.

Uh…what? lol where did you read that BS? Plywood sags under its own weight lol. In fact a 3/4” sheet of MDF doesn’t sag much at all compared to a 3/4” sheet of plywood when held by each end. I can prove this to you as I work in the lumber section of Lowe’s and have to move sheets all the time.

You’re just saying nonsense now that you heard someone else say.

Actually, my family has been in the lumber business since the 1960s. Google some actual scientific testing then report the actual results.

We are talking about speaker boxes here and there’s decades of proof of MDF use in the audio world. The onus on proving a point is on the person making the declaration, not the recipient. But all of this is besides the point. MDF is superior to just about anything except Baltic Birch when it comes to building sub boxes. And there’s more than enough opinions from actual professional audio builders to support this claim.

Mdf might be good enough but it is certainly not stronger, or stiffer, and cannot handle pressure better than plywood. Mdf has more flex and Glue joints are also weaker. Science proves it.

Again, we are talking about subwoofer boxes here, not tables, or chairs, or cabinets. Nobody is standing on top of subwoofer boxes to see if they flex. MDF is acoustically superior (proven by science since we are throwing out non-sequitur statements). And every major brand of audio sub box builders uses MDF and not plywood. You didn’t build a box out of plywood so your in-trunk example is apples and oranges.

And yes, MDF is good enough, considering audio builders have been using it for decades. It’s “more than adequate”.

MDF is easiest to work with which is why we use it. The box needs to contain a volume of air with the least amount of flex. Everything else is internet pissing.
