New to all things turbo'd and have a question, with video. Couple weeks ago, I had made a thread about what I thought smelled like exhaust coming through the cabin and outside after switching to my catless downpipe.

Having the car on the dyno today, I got a video behind it and there is a significant amount of smoke coming through the exhaust.

The shop owner said that is smelled allot like turbo oil, that is oil seeping past and into the exhaust, as if there's a bad seal. Just looking for some thoughts on if this is something serious - It didn't happen before the downpipe and the tune that was on the car didn't change when this started happening, literally right after I installed this it began. Could this have been happening all along and the catalytic converter was just burning it up before exiting?

Is my turbo in bad shape?

I think YellowBee has been experiencing something very similar to this. Maybe he'll chime in and can tell you more about it.

Try just revving it to the same RPM with no load on it. If it smokes the same, it's oil going past the seals. If it's only with a load on it, it's just fuel. The oil pressure doesn't care if there's a load on the motor or not. (unless it's on the compressor side obviously). If you are concerned about that, check your hot pipe for oil.

I think this is becoming a common issue I'm seeing this pop up allot, I know mine is doing the same & right after the downpipe was installed. I'm wondering if the CAT was masking this? Just hate idling & it smoking like crazy

How many miles are on the car? I believe YellowBee said his did it around 4000 and he's untuned. This could be the PCV system failing

I have turbo oil smoke when I first start her up, but it doesn't smoke all over the place. It goes away when I pull away. I don't think it is bad turbos, just allowing the turbo the flow a LOT more than the stock downpipe.

I think it's fuel.

Does it do it if there's no load? EG: Press the clutch and rev, or rev in neutral?

I'd be shocked if it's oil -- it's possibly fuel, but eh.

It's oil you can smell it besides fuel won't give you that much smoke at idle, if it was fuel you would mainly get the rich smell not the smoke

Yes, it's definitely oil and I will double check for smoke under no load today. This is an easy test, swapping in the OEM downpipe and seeing if it does it again. If it does, then the catless downpipe I imagine is allowing it to get past. If that's the case, putting the stock downpipe on and having it looked at by FORD won't do me any good.

Otherwise, I think the other option would be to try a catted downpipe.

Any Catted downpipe will mask some of the oil consumption by burning the oil further from the higher heat generated by the chemical reaction in the cat but it wont have any affect on the actual problem.

Most likely you have ring seating issues and the easiest way to determine where this oil is coming from is to remove your lower FMIC hose at the inlet and check for oil film. If you see or feel oil film or even oil puddling slightly in that area then you have engine/ring blow by. If not then investigate your PCV system.

Under load, it's definitely fuel. As soon as the load is lifted is when the oil comes through(the smoke goes from gray to blue). Do you have a catch can installed?
