Hey guys, after searching the forum I can't find a solution to the problem I'm having with my trunk. So a couple of months back I opened my trunk to put some groceries in and something fell off the trunk onto the road. I didn't think much of it until a few days later the left side of my trunk was raised. I opened the trunk and noticed that one of the two bolts holding the trunk to the hinge rusted and fell off. Tbh I have no idea what type of material the trunk is or how to go about fixing it. I'm at least hoping that I don't have to replace the trunk. There are some pictures below; any help is much appreciated.

The last (3) pics showing the black trunk lid nuts/bolts - I can tell you that someone has tampered with those because:

1) they don’t come from the factory with stripped nut edges
2) they don’t come from the factory with missing or chipped paint - they are coated in paint from the factory, both the nuts and the threads.

Did you replace/swap your trunk lid or need to realign it at some point (or maybe prior owner did if you bought used)?

Those nuts don’t just shear off the bolt and fall to the floor. Not trying to be offensive or sarcastic at all, but just saying, those were tampered with and too much torque is what damaged the one that is now missing.

Also one other thing I noticed in your pics - see that clear circular decal? Well, that’s to seal that hole to prevent water and moisture from entering into the trunk lid. On yours, there seems to be rusting occurring inside of that trunk lid, because that’s a rust stain on the other side of that decal. You may want to get it checked at a Dealer.

There is a thread on this site that discusses a similar hardware failure with the front hood attaching hardware and what some members have done to repair that same sheared bolt damage seen on your trunk lid. Similar hardware failure is a bigger issue with the hood than the trunk lid.

EDIT:
Here ya go, I had to locate the above referenced thread. Take a few moments to read through this thread it may help with your situation:

Thanks for the quick reply! The trunk was bought from someone who had installed a carbon fiber wing on it. From what I read on the thread you mentioned the best solution would be to tig weld the stud or install a rivet. My concern is that there is practically nothing left of the stud. I don't plan on removing the spoiler/trunk so some friends suggested to weld the hinge and trunk but I don't think that could hold the weight of the trunk and spoiler when opened. I took it the dealership last weekend because I was having some steering issues and they pointed it to the gap in the trunk.
