Anyone in the UK fitted a tow bar to their S550 yet?

I do a lot of camping and its a pain loading everything in. It all goes in but it takes ages and a danger of scratching the interior is high.

I've seen in the US quite a few are available and fitting seems easy. There are even holes in the 'chassis' already! Ford USA have published SAE towing specifications as well.

You and me both, to confirm the 2016 UK manual does say "Your vehicle is not approved for trailer towing. Never tow a trailer with your vehicle."

I've thought about fitting a receiver to the back of my car (only car in the household), not for towing but for a bike rack for taking our two bikes. Have looked at roof racks in the past, but didn't find anything terribly suitable - don't like the idea of suction cups on the rear window.

I think the reason for this is that there isn't anything structurally suitable to attach the tow bar to. I think some of the US kits have got round this problem?

The holes go through the thin boot floor hence it saying no towing in the UK manual and a weight limit in the US one

I read that somewhere in the US section would provide a link but can't find it...do a search
They don't go through the boot floor. They go into the sides and bottom of the monocoque structure that extends under the boot floor. (at least the Curt towbar does)

But yes the steel there is thin.

Yeah knew it was something like that it's the limiting factor...there's some US kits that get round this somehow

Just because you can fit a towbar doesn't mean it is legal. My old Mondeo ST220 could have a physical towbar fitted but was not type approved.

You need to look at the first two weights on the VIN. If the second figure down is the same as the first figure (or 0000) then you cannot legally tow anything with that vehicle and your insurance will be invalid if you do.

A towbar fitter should not fit a towbar even if only for a bike rack as there is no way of guaranteeing this with future owners.
