just do you research.

I go to a touch free wash with plastic guides so the wheels dont get scratched. zero brushes or drapes touch the car.

at the end, they detail it out with clean damp towels.

There are good and bad car washes. I prefer to wash myself, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Yep. I've tried to bucket wash but the water freezes faster than I can get to all of the car. Plus, even with rubber gloves, it's freaking cold :-)

I would use touchless except I don't want to force water into the hood vents of my car. That's why I do the "wand dance" above. I can shoot the water and avoid them as much as possible.
So I went ahead and washed the car myself at a self serve wash and followed your instructions. Unfortunately, the pre-soak was barely coming out of the hose so I had to stop half way and switch to soap due to my time running out. Car isn't THAT clean, but it took off most of the gunk and that's what I was worried about.

I've got my own driveway, garage and all the fixing, and I still wash at a coin operation. No cleanup, no rinsing and reusing mitts, all in about 5 minutes. Instaed of two-bucket method i use 6-7 chemical guys mitts and one bucket. $1 to pre-spray and foam up bucket, then scrub wheels first, all around bottom, and then top down method, then $1 to rinse. Cheap, convenient, and equal to some of the most conservative washing method for protecting paint.

I live in Northern Virginia as well. So far I have used the Sunoco touchless washes to get the salt off my car. It gets most of the crap off the car
Other than that I wash my car at friend's house when the weather is warmer, like this Saturday.

I used two do far. One at Gallows and Route 50. Another near Fairfax Costco. iEcobeast told me about a touchless that uses steam in Burke.

My winter weather washing protocol using the manual washing bay

1) Use a light pressure rinse to get off the visible surface salt and grime; go at least 2 times around the car)
2) Use pre-soak at least 3 times around the car to pull off as much surface grime as possible that would normally be taken off by friction and soapy water
3) Use normal wash at least 2 times around the car to foam up what has been treated with the pre-soak
4) Use normal rinse at least 3 times around the car to finish

I usually spend no more than $4.50 to do this, and it gets me 85% of the result of the hand wash with minimum effort. Also, after the wash, I immediately get on the interstate and drive for 10 minutes to "blow dry". I go to a car wash that is located further way exclusively for this.

Obviously, if the roads are wet when you leave the car wash, you will get salty road grime on the lower rocker area and wheel wells again. I've done this in temperatures as low as 10 deg F, so in those cases, some water drops will freeze.

Good luck with your wands-only spray wash!
I do pretty much the same thing, same way. Helps if you had a good layer of wax at some point not long ago, everything comes off easier.
