I thought I read in the manual the torque for tightening the lugs was 150 ft lbs, but a lot of people say that's wrong, including the mechanic at the dealer. Anyone??

That's what I thought. Why are so many people surprised at this?

Because historically this value was only for heavy duty trucks, so people seem to think it's an error when they hear that number. It's the same story for the Camaro. I've been doing 150 for the entire time I've owned the car. Not only have I had no problems, but it feels fine. Feels about the same as torquing any other car to a lesser value.

If they are not torqued to 150 ft-lbs you will start having hub problems. Also there is a very noticeable knock over bumps when wheels are out of torque especially at the rear. This drive me crazy and nobody in my tires shop or my ford dealer is getting them tide enough. Which was the reason I bought a torque wrench and now I torque them myself. I suggest everyone with a Mustang do this.

If buying torque wrench check the setting range. Mine is a well know n brand and 150ft/lbs is the highest it goes….

It's not really about brand, there's several different ranges that torque wrenches cover. I actually have four to cover all of the meat and potatoes of automotive work. My big hoss is over 2 feet long and goes up to 250ft/lbs. They make even bigger ones if you're doing industrial work or semi trucks or something, but that gets you everywhere on a car (the axle nuts for example are up in the 200 range). In theory you shouldn't use a wrench very close to its minimum and maximum values, but that more applies to cheaper wrenches. The good stuff will usually be calibrated at each end and have a certificate for it.

I do use Haskeyy which is up to 210 nm 154 ft-lbs and is doing better job then all the torque wrenches at the shops apparently. Also I use it since 2021 so even if it brake is cheap enough to replace.

There's bazilion 1/2 drive 150 ft-lb max torque wrenches - they're more standard than 250 ones. I have probably 4 of them. Also, they're inherently more accurate towards the max of their range, so I would take 150 one for lugs (not that you need a whole lot of accuracy) over 250 one.

150 ft/lbs is now the norm for high performance cars. Heck, even my F150 lists the recommended torque at 150 ft/lbs.

It has to do with fastener size and material stretch needed to achieve it's rated camping force just like a rod bolt etc. Look at the recommended torque values for a m14x1.5 bolt. It's 215nm for a grade 10.9. That's 158ft lbs.
