Not a complete loss, then.
I've actually had a couple of incidents similar to yours. The required pedal position for a 'start' in my '08 could best be described as "compressing the carpet, with zero upward tolerance and no height adjustability for the position switch". That lasted all of maybe two weeks (brand new, built to order car). Years before that, the mechanical linkage on the '79 Malibu I used to own slipped out of its pedal connection, letting the full force of the pressure plate springs spear the linkage right through the little clutch position switch. At a traffic light, and of course the engine stalled. I must have had enough tools and what-not with me, because I did get myself going again before the traffic light went through too many cycles. I'd kind of forgotten about the Malibu episode until now.
