If it was contamination, which I'm not quick to rule out, wouldn't that mean multiple cams would be damaged? I haven't been keeping track, but my damage was only on one exhaust side camshaft.

Yes, you are correct. If only only the cams in one head are damaged, then it was most likely a bearing setup (clearance) issue or bearing bore centers alignment problem. Less likely would be an oiling problem going just to that head. But if the repair doesn't fail, then the oiling to that head is probably fine. If the same failure happens again, then it could be oil supply to that area having an issue.
