No, the 2018 is not worth the price increase.

I just don't get it. The 2018 Mustang GT is still an S550, plain and simple. Yes, it has been upgraded, but the price increase over a 2017 model is just not worth the added expense.

Buy a left-over 2017 GT. Add a good CAI, a tune, and cat deletes; plus some Steeda or BMR suspension goodies, have the same or equal performance as a new 2018 GT and you will still have saved yourself thousands and thousands of dollars.

Again, I just don't get the swooning and fawning over the 2018 GT? Yes, it is definitely an improvement over the 2015-2017 GT, but not a $20,000 improvement. Not even close!

Better yet, find yourself a low-mileage, clean 2016 GT from a mature private seller and you will have bought yourself a car at effectively half-price of a new 2018 GT.
The A10 is worth it. After driving one for 800 miles, it’s worth it. I paid $30,xxx for my base. That is a lot of bang for the buck. That’s why I went base auto thought, I don’t care for digital dash, I don’t need giant screen radio. I do need a badass engine backed by an A10 tranny that I can mod to infinity!!!!

What this person said. I own a 2018 GT with the A10 but this is my first Mustang, first American car, and first V8 so what do I know :D To me this car is awesome but if I had the 2016 or 2017 GT, I wouldnt be upgrading. Instead, I will take the money and put a supercharger on the V8 and blow the doors off of many exotics :)

I only have the '15, which is similar to the '16-17. I would say for the price difference, a tune, tires, etc, would give you a similar performing car. My '15 received an LMS tune and supposedly 40+ rwhp it was on a par with the '18 except for the A10. The tune costs about $500 USD. If you mod it more heavily later, like I am with a SC, then I really wouldn''t do the '18. With the exception of personal preference for the sheet metal and a few other oddities which are nice. Other exception: 2019 Bullitt.

Live in Australia and the 2017 is in stock and massively discounted at $56k drive away for a GT Auto Coupe. The 2018 comes out in 3 months and for the same car is $72k drive away.

So the question is, is the 2018 worth the premium and the wait?

For those who have had both how different do they feel?
I have a 2015 GT Premium, auto. Just recently test drove an '18 GT Premium. Granted the one I test drove didn't have PP2, but it was basically the same as my car. In fact, my car had more features. I couldn't tell a lick of difference in handling or performance. 25 more HP just isn't noticeable in driving around town. Unless you just have to have the latest and "greatest" or are in love with the new look, I'd buy the '17 and spend the savings on a nice vacation. :)

I wonder how many saying to go with the 2015-2017 over the 2018 have driven both? :p

I have a 2016 GT A6, did 3 2018 GT A10 test drives, one 401a active exhaust 20” wheels, one 401a PP, one 400a PP + Magneride and fully loaded (besides having 400a vs 401a). It’s a night and day difference, especially the last test drive with the Magneride equipped. Also, the 2018 is coming back from dynos with 437whp (manual, the auto rev limits in 7th to 6600rpm and hits 417 because of it)... so, unless Ford found a way for only a 5% drivetrain loss, the engine is underrated.

It’s a Mustang Fan site so that’s the “why” for all the swooning and fawning. The way many here throw their money away doesn’t even affect me negatively anymore. Seriously, between upgrading every few years and modding up the car, they would be better off just growing a few grand more into the purchase and buying a base Corvette. That at least would keep you more in the black than a Mustang. But yes the changes don’t make sense to upgrade to a 2018 if you already have a S550. I would always buy new though. Mature private seller means V6 Mustang which is what I am - a GT with mods and an old fart raises red flags for me.

The OP doesn’t have an S550. He’s asking which to buy, a 17 or an 18.

My bad - getting old. He may as well get the 18. The 17s where I live have been sitting on the lot for 6 or 8 months. Personally I like the look of the 15-17 but the hit he takes on depreciation makes the 2018 model the one to get. Even at the higher price. Just keep the options low.

There’s a lot of people with gen1 S550s asking if they should upgrade to the gen2, so it’s easy to get confused

I do not own an 18, I have the 15 in my sig, but I drove a 10 speed auto today. It was a very basic package, 3.15 gears and I will say if I had a choice today, it would be an 18 with the auto hands down. Night and day from my 15 when it was stock. I loved the 10 speed auto, it pulled hard going through the gears. Much so than my stock 15...obviously has more power too. Of cours my 15 now has a Circle D 4c and keeps the car in its power band with fast, fast shifts. I wonder what an 18 auto with an aftermarket tq converter would feel like. It may not need it but IMO, the 15-17 does.

As far as the motor, it is not overrated, it is SAE certified power. Dyno’s can vary, the 10 speed auto is simply an excellent geared transmission.

It’s to my understanding that there are new ways to underrate the motor even with the current SAE rules. Things that can be argued are for fuel savings, such as variable valve timing, can be turned off (afaik, in the case of the Infiniti Red Sport, this was actually confirmed. The official rating is 400hp, but the dynos come back with 374whp consistently). The manual transmission 18 is coming back at 437 according to American Muscle, and that’s on the same dyno that they put the gen1 S550 on, which had a normal ~18% drivetrain loss.

One more thing I will add. I drove 2 different 2018 PP1 manual trans Mustang GTs recently. One with magneride and one without. Both shifted better than any stick shift I have ever owned. The Magneride did make a noticeable difference. Both cars were very quiet and that shifting, best ever. Now, I have not driven a '15-17 stick, so I can't compare there, but I did own an '11 GT which has the Getrag82 trans. If you are looking stick, the '18s are really excellent. Like previously stated with the dual disc clutch. Can take a LOT more HP/TQ without upgrading as well.

I drove a 18 manual ecoboost and it shifted smoother than the 16 ecoboost manual I have now. that in itself was not the selling point, the $ 24700 price for a base 18 ecoboost with 18 in. wheels out the door price did it for me. Koons ,in virginia even agreed to take my 16 lease 3 months early. the 17 's I found were more money than the 18's. the store is 240 miles away but whatever.
