So, it would appear that the ever scamming powers that be (insurance companies) want to foil my plans. And by foil I mean prevent. Arseholes.

Apparently a 21 year old in a 31k car with a wrap is usually going to hike me up 5 grand (or 550 mimimum) on the price for my insurance. ANNUALLY.

Now, I know I've said I wanted my car wrapped, and I'm going to hold fire on spoiling what colour just yet. But I was wondering if you guys could help me?

The questions I've got are, can I make my car unique, without full wrapping. Such as so, I keep it race red however roof wing mirrors might go carbon fibre. Little details like that? Or would insurance immediately cancel knowing I've got a pit of vinyl on my car.
What about wrapping the side skirts, splitter and valance in carbon fibre?

What defines a modification really. And what is something that can somewhat go "under the radar"?

Alternatively, I have £1600 earmarked for my wrap. What other things could I do with that £1600 on my mustang.

Appreciate any help...

Gutted for you. To have your plans ruined at the last hurdle too. Still, better now than after the money is spent.

I can't see a problem with side skirts but then insurance companies will take any excuse to get out of a claim. I personally will be telling them everything done to mine l, however slight or small. Just not worth the risk mate

Since stripes can affect the cost of insurance I would imagine anything you do is going to bump up your premium. Especially being 21. That's just how it is.

I won't show you the picture of the "standard" MK2 Escort I used to drive when I was your age. :bolt:

As for what is a modification....if it wasn't on the car from the factory, or was offered BY the factory as an option, then I think you'll find an insurance company will class it as a mod. Whether that puts the price up will depend on the company but being 21 is against you I'm afraid.

Half of your £1600 could be used for a clear PPF. Not quite the same but will keep it looking good.

Anything that is modified...

Doesn't get any clearer than that.

Sorry for bursting you bubble mate but I knew this was going to happen. Insurance is shit for young people.
This will be my first year of not having to declare my totting up ban. I feel your pain. Especially now there is no record of my ban anywhere but I still had to declare it!

Echoing everyone else it's a shame for you but anything you do is a mod. Some will affect premiums more than others though with an insurer that will allow a 21year old to add mods.

Shop around for who will allow it and then ring them to find out what they will allow for small premium uplifts.

Hi there

A modification is any change from factory specification.

I informed them on tiny things such as:
Black pony badge (no charge)
Side decals (no charge)
Steering wheel (no charge)
Gear knob (no charge)
Wheel spacers (no charge)
Exhaust (charged)
Lowered with dampers/springs/bushes (charged)

You need to inform of everything, some are zero charge but they need to know and other items be ready to lube up. ;)

Do you own your own Company - could you insure your car through the company ?

What would the price be to get your Father to insure the car and have you as a named driver ?

Okay. So scrapping the whole vehicle wrap. Assuming I leave it red. Everything is factor EXCEPT for the roof and wing mirrors being wrapped in carbon fibre. I assume my insurance won't bunny hop hundreds of quid? Right?

It might end up being a roof and wing mirrors cf and maybe cf side parts with then rest of the money going into an exhaust and pocketing the rest... they're mods that most of you don't seem to be being charged an arm and a leg for...

Would be interested to know if anyone full wraps their car or speaks to an Insurer how that effects their premium. Being 21 officially sucks.[emoji38]
Sorry, made a little typo on the original post, I know what clarifies as a mod I was more wondering the morality of it haha!

As said in other posts, you really do need to tell your insurance company everything you change from stock. they will not cover you if you have not mentioned something they spot (if you ever have to claim) - even if they would not have charged you for the "small" mod you have made

There might not be any difference in premium increase from full wrap and half wrap/stripes

Your exhaust will put loads of money on as it a performance upgrade.

Have you tried a quote for just an exhaust? They are easy so to do online. I bet you won't see any of the big names rushing to insure you with an exhaust

Lets not go off topic regarding the others, the wrap isn't a replacement of colour, it's an overlay ontop of the colour, the paint will still be the same, and will not change, it'll have a vinyl over the top of it.
PLEEEEASE tell me it was going to be this:

If that was it I'm going to suggest we all club together to pay for the increased insurance for you! :D

No. Not disclosing wrap. It was a full colour change. I'm buying in red. Full colour change wouldn't be that. As awesome as it does look.

FYI I have no issues with race red, i just want my car unique.
