I get what your aimed at in the comparison. The safety side of cars has added weight for sure as has the creature comforts. Completely understand the cost side as well especially when you get in to 350’s and 500’s for example. The one huge aspect that csn’t be overlooked is the performance level of the cars. Even a base Gt with a manual and some strategic mods can be turned in to a track monster for relatively low cost when compared to performance level. I’ll leave alone the politics side and the affects on inflation.

I'm not saying Mustang IIs are great, but I do think SLA front suspension would be a huge improvement that we will probably never get in a more modern Mustang. A little camber gain goes a long way.

I also wish the current Mustangs were less expensive and lighter weight - more like the Mustang II in those ways as well.

I definitely would not advocate Mustang II styling though.

Firebirds and Camaros of those years definitely look a lot better than the Mustang II, but they sure weren't powerhouses either.

I remember a guy locally to me when I was a kid with a Mustang II with a lightly hopped up 302 in it. He was racing a guy with a '76 Monte Carlo that had all kinds of mods with a 454, big cam, high stall converter, etc. The Mustang II was faster. I'm sure it's easy to visualize when you consider the sheer size of those Montes from that time.
Back in the early '90s when I and several friends more or less lived at the dragstrip, one of said friends scored a deal he couldn't refuse on a mint black Mustang II Ghia coupe with the 2.3 in it, complete with tan half vinyl top. He dropped a stout 302/C4 in it with a narrrowed 9" out back, and it was a terror on the street and strip. We gave him a lot of shit about it at the time, but the thing ripped and made mincemeat out of some classic muscle.
