Actually that is not what happened. It's way too long of a story to get into here but it was JVC that came out with VHS, not Panasonic (which did own a majority stake in JVC). And although they did give units to education that is not what killed Beta. It was the alliances with US manufactures at the time. Sony went to Zenith, JVC/Panasonic went to RCA. Big mistake on Sony's part. The Beta system was always superior to VHS but it didn't matter. Same thing happened with Plasma and LCD TV. The better product doesn't always win. Sony had the best TV at the time but blew it big tome with video. At least until 8MM came out.Sony came out with the BetaMax VCR and it was excellent, but Panasonic came out with the VHS/VCR that took over the Market.....why, they gave out the machines free to schools, It didn't take long to overwhelm the market and the Betamax died out.
By the way, the reason I know this is because I worked for Panasonic. I was there when it happened.
