Sony came out with the BetaMax VCR and it was excellent, but Panasonic came out with the VHS/VCR that took over the Market.....why, they gave out the machines free to schools, It didn't take long to overwhelm the market and the Betamax died out.
Actually that is not what happened. It's way too long of a story to get into here but it was JVC that came out with VHS, not Panasonic (which did own a majority stake in JVC). And although they did give units to education that is not what killed Beta. It was the alliances with US manufactures at the time. Sony went to Zenith, JVC/Panasonic went to RCA. Big mistake on Sony's part. The Beta system was always superior to VHS but it didn't matter. Same thing happened with Plasma and LCD TV. The better product doesn't always win. Sony had the best TV at the time but blew it big tome with video. At least until 8MM came out.

By the way, the reason I know this is because I worked for Panasonic. I was there when it happened.

How about Cinemax back in the day, trying to catch a glimpse of Morgan Farchild's goodies between the squiggly lines on the TV (we never paid for Cinemax lol)
Oh, you kids. Cinemax was a newbie. Started in 1980. HBO started in 1972. And it wasn't cable. It was OTA on a microwave dish. :)

No (I had to Google that), but when I saw the pic it reminded me of the hours and miles spent in the back of a 1970 Ford Country Squire with my brother who is 4 years younger. That wagon had the popular woodgrain sides with plastic wood trim. Just like this one:

Not quite. They actually had the larger hole as an attempt by RCA to sell their turntables. It's an example of the earliest form of proprietary music format

Who knew a little plastic doohickey would allow them to be played on a standard (speed adjustable) turntable :giggle:
IOW, hacking's mechanical-side ancestor . . .

I'll bet those always worked flawlessly.
Fun fact: The government basically outlawed hideaways because they could potentially freeze/ice up and leave a vehicle without headlights.

Oddly, the hideaways on my '67 Cougar still work flawlessly, most do not....

Goes both ways. US automakers had to fight for laws that allowed rectangular headlights. One of their arguments was since rectangular lights were shorter than the equivalent round lamp, fronts of cars could be made lower for better mileage. Boom, first thing automakers did was stack them vertically (eg. Monte Carlo, Cordoba, etc.).
