also there is no mention in the instructions on how to move the front subframe only the rear with the prybar. i dont know if its off misaligned that bad or just due the bolts being taken in and out too many times

so i got around to this and of course there is one that wont line up, and it is on the front, the rears were easy with a pry bar. on my drivers side the 21mm hex bolt wont go in. about 2 turns in it just wants to stop. even with the rear subframe completely out and no bushing it stops at the same spot. even with the torque wrench is really tough to turn and is about 80% in. im probably gonna end up at a shop like the OP. thing is i have to drive to arizona in a couple of days and only 3 of the 4 subframe bolts are torqued and i dont know if i can get a shop to fix this before then. i really doubt that bolt is going anywhere but im really hoping the threads in the subframe itself are not damaged.

You gotta loosen the other bolts to allow the subframe to move once all bolts are engaged you can proceed. Also, make sure the bolts are clean. I even applied a bit of wd40 to assist them in.

i had all 4 bolts loose while this was happening. ill probably try again. im afraid to do so because if i take it out i fear i might not be able to get it in at all and wont be able to make this trip. ill try the wd40

Also, don't be too afraid of snapping these bolts, those are fairly massive and high grade and are burdened with holding the rear together, so they aren't going to snap. If you had an impact gun the bolt would likely go right in.

what are the chances of the subframe itself stripping out. i did plan on getting and impact kit as soon as i got to AZ i do have a breaker bar

I've had my subframe down 3 times now and 2 I had the impact gun. The one time I did it by hand the bolts where very tight.

Get something decent, I wasted my money on that Ryobi unit from Home Depot and had to get myself an air unit from a friend afterwards. Just make sure the bolts are started before using the gun.

Please do not use an impact on the subframe bolts. There have been many people who have screwed up the threads in the subframe, just not worth the risk.

When ready to tighten simply use a jack on a midway point between the front and rear hole on one side at a time then tighten the bolts and repeat on the other side. Make sure to jack the subframe all the way up till it stops.

If the bolts are not able to start with fingers or at least with a hand tool (ratchet) do NOT ram it home with a impact.

Yes, they had to be re tapped to fix them.

Honestly, you should be able to hand tighten them in a good ways before needing a ratchet but you should never need an impact gun. If they wont go in easy your either cross threading it or the subframe isn't jacked all the way back up.

Think about it, if the subframe isn't jacked up all the way till it stops the bolts are going to have to raise it back up as you tighten it. So, if the subframe isn't centered correctly the bolt/threads will most likely strip trying to pull the weight of the whole assembly back into position.

Yes, the impact gun can cause such damage on the wrong hands. Lol

yea i had the subframe jacked all the way up on that side with no luck. ill probably have to get it looked at. it must be getting cross threaded somehow, it used to go in fairly easily.

Agree with the impact gun statements here. I use mine to make disassembly much quicker, but install is all hand and ratchet.....learned the hard way of course...

did you have to get threads tapped too? Are the threads built into the frame or is there a nutplate of some sort?
