I recently order a handful of items from Steeda direct. Before the order arriveed to me I realized one of the items, $35 trans bushing mount was redundant for me since I had an MGW shifter. Once I received the order I asked if I could ship it back since it was still unopened in the original packaging They responded that there would be a 25% restocking fee. It's a pretty small fee, but it has turned me off from them nonetheless.

A restocking fee (Steeda’s is 20%) is fairly standard, given the additional resources required to process returns. Regardless of the size or value of the part, returns involve multiple internal steps and teams to properly receive, inspect, and restock the product.

Many online businesses clearly layout restocking fees on returns. Usually it’s found in their FAQs or the Ordering/Payment/Return sections of their website.

Any restock fee is almost common place and normal in today’s ONLINE retail environments. Many customers just don’t read those website sections or fine print before ordering. It’s like buying merchandise local and when you go to pay with a CC, they have some notification up or the Register Clerk (where a real person still exists at a register) informs there is a 3% upcharge to cover “their” CC fees…. Which is funny at best because the higher the $ they charge for a CC transaction, the more they have to pay to the CC Company to begin with so the 3% upcharge isn’t covering squat…

I’ve been buying Steeda parts and recommending them to many for 30+ years now, basically since the original 80’s-90’s 5.0 Movement with the Fox Mustangs - essentially where they and many other long time Mustang vendors started out. I would not hesitate to buy anything from them, as their product quality and customer service has always been top notch - anyone in the industry will say the same.

Plus think of it this way - you may have a brand new part that was redundant in your order - so you have 3 options:
1) keep it and break it out when needing a future replacement.
2) return it and accept the small restock fee - after all you put it in your cart, not Steeda.
3) Sell it here on the forum and either take a small hit or maybe break even by selling it for what you paid and cost of shipping falls on buyer.

I disagree. I buy a lot of stuff for my other hobbies. For decades. I also make a living out of selling online. Restocking fees in those industries is only considered when something is opened and no longer sealed in factory packaging. Margins are pretty terrible in the automotive industry, perhaps that is why some of these retailers like Steeda hold on to a default restocking fee.

You would be surprised, even as a small business, the fees/charges that are administered by the financial institutions on up front purchases & even returns - I can assure you, no one wins when a return is made.

Thank you,

Yep. There are choices for purchasing many items. Restocking fees are a competitive disadvantage and they are nowhere near standard. Choose your suppliers carefully and reward pro-customer policies!
