Was merging on to I10 recently in San Antonio and was well established in lane which was becoming the on ramp. Lifted F250 comes over from 2 lanes over and cuts me off so he can make the on ramp. I was feeling friendly so I merely honked instead of flipping the bird etc etc. wasn't even a long honk. He immediately rolled his window down and dumped a water bottle out so it would go all over my car.

I just chuckled and went around. Usually I would retaliate but wasn't really feeling it that day.

I've noticed quite a few asshats, maybe a few more than usual from truck days, but people just drive poor today all around. No one pulls over to shoulder like they used to to let you around. People accelerate when you try to pass and you're in oncoming traffic lane. Driving under speed limit in fast lane. Texting, playing video games, scratching lotto tix while driving. Speeding up/slowing down to box you in.

This whole thread started with the assumption that diesel smoke was intentionally spewed towards the open window resulting in the OP speeding up and "flipping the bird" at the truck. So, who exactly started this whole confrontation?

"Rolling coal" is something that's never done by accident. Drivers in those big diesel trucks know exactly what they're up to.

How would one of those big diesel trucks accelerate without "rolling coal"? I assume it is a simple byproduct of depressing the accelerator. Just like in a Mustang you may choose to accelerate at a particular place just to make noise, or you might just want to accelerate, and happen to make noise.

I had this exact thing happen to me last week. Looked at what happened to the woman who was tailing me for a few miles (all I could see was her windshield in my rearview) and then tried to whip around me on my exit and crashed into a car in front of her and smashed into the guard rails. Not that simple (or nice). There's something called a 'smoke switch' that tricks the ECU into dumping a LOT more fuel into the cylinders. Since it will not all burn completely, you get LOTS more smoke. In normal driving, the switch would be 'off', so throwing up a smoke show absolutely has to be intentional. I don't know if they rev in neutral or in drive against the torque converter, but that may not matter.

The correct analogy here would be if you had exhaust cutouts with in-car control, where you'd actively decide to open them up to blast the eardrums of the driver in the car beside you but keep them closed the rest of the street driving time.

Yup common across the "diesel bombers" community. <-- hot rod diesel guys. Just visit any diesel forum and there is normally a DIY section where this is a common mod (as dumb as it sounds).

A few years ago I witnessed a diesel bro-dozer fill up the entire open cab of a sedan in the lane next to it with smoke as we were all sitting in stopped traffic. The truck was lifted with a side facing exhaust tip behind the passenger side rear wheel. It was all but obvious that was the type of shit that got him off. Wonderful sort of people, dieselbros.

We have several (redneck) diesel guys where I work and "blowing coal" seems to be some kind fun for them personally I don't get it but I guess you have to have a certain type mentality, if any to understand this perverse behavior! I see a guy jumping curbs to get around peeps in other cars,and I'm calling 911 to turn his ass in! Had a trucker once that was tailgating me @ 90+mph and doing it to others as well after I got out of harms way I made my call! He got pulled over 4 miles down the road! Fixed his ass good! Done!

I carry always where allowed and I fully support the right of everyone else to do so, but in a traffic situation I wouldn't have mine on display until I had no other choice. A situation could go from annoying/aggressive to catastrophic in a heartbeat when firearms are involved. Plus, where I live I presume everyone else is packing as well.

I used to think driving was sort of like the internet where you could say or do anything and then drive off and all is well. This mentality made me a little road ragey.

Then one day I witnessed a road rage incident where a guy cut off a Porsche in a vw. The Porsche guy honked at the stop light and threw his hands in the air, so the vw driver puts his shit box into reverse, slams right into the front of the Porsche and tries to drive off. A block away the driver of the Porsche and his passenger had the vw driver on the pavement and there was a lot of blood. Police were there within minutes. Both probably got charged with felonies and had their lives derailed by a stupid 5 minute encounter.

You never know what's going to happen and acting tough or proving a point isn't worth it. You're entire life can change or end in a matter of minutes and for what? Cause somebody wasn't paying attention?
