I'll be interested to hear how this comes out. Seems the 9-speaker Premium system is so short on bass that Ford must be clipping the signal somewhere to protect the cheap speakers. I am not smart enough to know how to fix that and get a full-range signal that would properly feed real speakers.
I do know that when I replaced the factory speakers in my 89 LX 5.0 with Polk Audio components (no sub) that it absolutely transformed that system. I am sure the head unit wasn't anything fabulous (Ford's "premium sound" system of the era) but the sound out of those pricey speakers was just unreal. Clear, bright, with excellent bass response. Best and most cost-effective stereo upgrade I ever did.
