I also DD a top of the line 2012 Tacoma and this "base" blows it away. Figure I'll add Katskins later if I decide I want leather, and since it's not a DD I wasn't interested in the extras. Plus this way I can try to talk myself into the roush and still be around $40k all in.

Mustangs have been my DD's since my used '69 Mach 1/390 S Code back in the late 70's.

Regarding "Base" vs. "Prem", we're talking selectable drive modes, 9 speaker vs. 6 speaker sound, leather, large entertainment screen, adjustable lighting options, etc.

And the wheels, the wheels ...

Going from the gorgeous factory 20" Foundry Wheels to the base model's 18 Machined-face wheels is another issue. The dealer would have to exceed my expectations as far as numbers are concerned to get me interested.

That's a tough one. Take off wheels and tires are CHEAP. But depends on how much the other stuff is worth. i plan on tint, wheels/tires, and tower, K, and cowl brace. Other then that maybe a roush SC kit.

My last 3 or 4 Mustangs, I've become a stickler for originality. So whatever wheels came factory with the car is it.

As far as the other stuff, I suppose I could live with the base sound system but the smaller entertainment screen is tough. Like I was saying, the dealer would have to make me really, really happy with the deal/trade.

I have a base GT w/301A package and i have selectable drive modes, 9 speaker sound system, large screen, lighting options etc...so its possible to have a base car with some of the better features

Yeah 301A is like base plus doesn't seem like a base car at that level... the only noticeable difference between the 400A and 301A is the leather seats and everything that comes with them.

So I can see a lot of people getting the 301A package over a 400A car... I am sure there are other differences between them but don't feel like looking it up :

Oh and I still think the new 10r80 is amazing to keep it on topic... :)

Yeah, the same dealer near me that has the 10R80 had another base GT with the 301A .... but it was a stick.

I know its a little late on this thread, but I wanted to chime in. I have now test driven the following: 2018 Mustang GT Auto, 2018 Chevy Camaro 2SS Auto and the 2018 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack Auto.

This gives me a good idea of how each brand's auto functions.

The Dodge would shift readily with the paddles, but it felt like the car was not too happy about it and you got nothing in the way of sound or feel to let you know your intervention was welcome. In drive mode the transmission behaved well and fast, but reving out to only 5,500 was not very fun and resulted in more gear hunting.

In the camaro I almost felt like it was not working correctly when using the paddles. When I would down shift I would look at the RPM meter and it literally had a two second lag to get to the correct RPM after each down shift. I have to wonder if it even has rev matching. The syncing felt like molasses so I quit messing with it and switched to drive mode.

The mustang GT was the only car that I felt rewarded me for being in sport mode and using the paddles. When you would down shift the RPM would immediately and without hesitation flip to the correct RPM for the gear with no complaint. The sound when doing it was very pleasing. Going up though the gears was also very fun. It was the only car that made me feel as if the paddles were meant to be used. I am the type of driver who enjoys engine breaking when coming to a stop light rather than using the brakes and I wait until the last minute to use them and rely on the transmission for the fun and sound of it.

Also, all three cars had the active exhaust option and in my opinion only the mustang gt sounded good inside the car at any speed regardless of exhaust setting. The challenger and the camaro were too quiet cruising.
