On my way home, around 1 am, I figured I'd data log a third gear pull on the expressway. The on ramp I take is a long two lane that merges into one and transitions onto the expressway way without any sharp turns, so it's perfect to stretch the legs a bit. Not to mention there's barely a soul around, and the cops all sit around the 6 lane highway right by the bars. You can see three or four lined up in a right turn lane, it's kind of funny. Anyways, I digress.

I didn't think much of the car next to me. Light goes green and I roll into the throttle. The little car on my left is right along side so I punch it and pass him. Then second, third... and the bugger is still right with me. I damn near redlined fourth when I backed off. He was maybe 2 car lengths behind, at the most. I was curious what was keeping up so well and, to my humble surprise, a Focus RS comes up along side me. If it wasn't for how well these winter tires grip, this story may have gone a bit different. I'll always be a v8 guy, but boosted four bangers have come a long way.

Yes sir... technology has made the small displacement engines quite competitive. My wives flat four is quicker 0-60 than my 5.2 liter... hers weighs quite a bit less, but a flat 4 going 0-60 in 3.9 seconds? Damn!

Is it the Cayman? If things don't become stagnant like it was in the 90s and 2000s, I'm really curious to see where things go in the next decade. 10 second 1/4 times may become the norm, and from turbo fours.

I had a 2018 Fiesta ST, putting 330 HP to the wheel. For a 2700 lb car, it really moved. That Focus RS must have had either a hybrid or big turbo on it. You can get a quality drop in turbo for the Focus for roughly $1800.00, 4 port aux fuel, add a Cobb Accessport and tune, 420 HP to the wheel with an E30-E45 tune is doable. Also the Focus RS is all wheel drive.

The Ecoboost platform is really economical compared to the 5.0 platform in terms of cost to added HP.

I used to drive a Mazda speed3 and I loved it. It was pretty quick and a lot of space for my two big dogs I had.

Focus RS is pretty nice too but I don't like hatchbacks anymore. Don't really care how fast they are.

Yep... it is the Cayman. Horsepower to weight ratio was no where near the Shelby ratio.

coming from the ST/RS community the RS is pretty quick, but for one to keep up with a bolt on coyote, especially a 18+ car, would definitely require a turbo upgrade. Stock turbo will take them to 385-390ish whp on e30/40 and they weigh 3500 lbs.

This is something I was wondering about. He didn't have an exhaust done and the turbo wasn't audible so I figured he was either stock or actually knew where to put his money. That weight actually surprises me. Before I looked it up I would have guessed the rocus weighed in around 3000 - 3200 lbs.

I could have gotten more out of my Fiesta, but I opted for a balance of reliability and power. I know a girl in Texas that's got IIRC over 80,000 miles on her Fiesta and she's got 385+ wheel hp.

I just posted the price of the turbo for comparison sake. A typical blower is 7k on up. To make good power with the Ecoboost platform, you'd also need an aftermarket intercooler ($650.00 on up), Accessport ($600.00), Tune ($450.00-$600.00), Aux fuel in either a single port or four port ($950.00-$1400.00). Grand total for necessary components is, $4500.00 at the low end. A downpipe and exhaust would run the total higher.

When I said hybrid, I meant in terms of turbo. A hybrid is a stock turbo with the compressor case enlarged to accept a bigger impeller. It's also got a larger turbine wheel and uprated bearings. The turbo I mentioned for $1800.00, is a Precision brand turbo.

Stock they're quick to 60 from a dig and that's about it. I agree with others that he probably had a hybrid turbo and a tune. What you should really be afraid of are the Golf GTI/R. With upgraded turbos those guys are making over 400WHP. If you aren't e85 tuned you'll get beat by a few cars lol

Occasionally I toy with the idea of hopping up the Tiguan 4Motion that's in the fleet....leave it bone stock on the outside and go nuts under the hood.

I had a gti try to run me from a light and he was definitely quick but I did gapp him pretty bad. But if I was in my 16 3.7 I would have been beat. The 16 3.7 did 0 to 60 in 5.4 it had 355 gears

I test drove a Focus RS when I was deciding what to buy and ended up with the GT. The deal breakers with the Focus were the unbearable Recaro seats and a hatch that was so small I'm not sure my golf clubs would be able to fit. The seats were so low my knees were pointing skyward, and you couldn't raise them enough to get comfortable. But I remember being amazed with how quick it was and how great it sounded.
