If an SCT firmware revision is required the software will advise you to flash the factory calibration back on the car before performing the update OR as mentioned above saving the factory firmware calibration (aka factory tune) to your PC device before hand IIRC. Other gernal software updates usually do not.
I have truly come to detest SCT use on S550 Mustangs. The Ngauge device (whether Lund specific or the ngauge standard used by all others) it is simple and straight forward. Datalogging is a breeze. Copying tunes to it requires no special software. A USB cable and a PC device is all that is needed. The gauges function and everything on the device is very straight forward. SCT seems to have computer geeks obsessed with software more so than hardware ease of use for the customer. The only plus for the SCT is that you can make custom datalog files with the Live-Link II software. Converting that into a file capable of being permanently added to the SCT device as to eliminate the need for PC interaction is more complicated. Another conversion is needed and if not mistaken the created new file then has to be added to the handheld via the tune update software. I only keep the Livelink II software on my laptop these days because it will open and graph out any .CSV file created by any handheld tuner device that generates such a data file that can also be opened in excel spreadsheet.
As mentioned above if you have not used your SCT handheld to update a tune in months (most don't after they are done) tons of updates pop up. On my X3 for the 14 I always ignored these and never had ANY issues - including firmware. On the X4 with the S550 it was a different story and I learned to hate the acronym SCT after using them exclusively for 4 different cars over the years.
