Hi Everyone - New Mustang owner here. I did some searching but did not find any concrete evidence as to what is the BEST setup when it comes to the CAI and a Tune. Looking to spend about $1,000 to wake up this Pony and would like some facts to assist in my decision.

I noticed a deal on CJ Pony for a JLT with an SCT x4 for around $725. I am leaning towards this setup but I just noticed that many people are selling their SCTs on this forum.

Is there an known issue or limitation with the SCT I am missing here? If you could do it all over again, what route would you take?

Thanks Everyone.

Assuming the SCT from CJ is a canned tune, a tune from Lund is going to be better sorted.

He can look through and make revisions based on what your car is doing for a better tune, and usually will make more power at the same time.

No issue with SCT that I'm aware of. I think most people just sell the tuner when they sell their cars. You can't do that with the FRPP packages though. Modifications really don't add any value to the car so some people try to recoup a bit of the cost by putting the car back to stock and selling the mods separately.

The FRPP (to my knowledge) can only be purchased when purchasing one of the FRPP packages, there are three of them. And the FRPP calibration can't be transferred to any other vehicle, you can't sell it.

The SCT (canned tune) is a good starting point, some people are happy with just the SCT canned tune.

Lund and AED are the upper levels when it comes to tunes, and if you go with one of those, you'll need a handheld tuner anyways, such as an SCT. Lund and AED are pricey, but you will see from many members that it's well worth it.

Howdy fellow Arizonian! Okay, fair enough. What combo are you running?

Bone stock for now. I'm saving my pennies for a whipple or boost works TT kit.
I don't want to pay twice for parts. Although with the holiday sales all around, it's hard not to take advantage of the tune/intake kits.

Good deals can be had. I got my pp2 for $635 installed at a car show. Once my warranty is up I'll go FI probably of some sort but to be honest I already got my money's worth out of it! The pp2 is only 1 or 2 mph less than the after market tuners in the 1/4, since the revision driveability is perfect!! The speed shop I deal with goes through lund so I will do a lund tune with current set up to see how much it out performs the pp2 before I go FI just for Shits and giggles!!!

That sounds like a good deal.

With coupon code, the SCT and JLT is $667.91 shipped at CJP. I think I'm gonna bite..

I say get a used SCT. The JLT looks cool I guess, but does nothing for performance. I had that exact combo myself before going FI. The stock airbox is the way to go. Im sure this will start trouble/disagreements here with me saying this, but it's 100% true.

Interesting. Just curious - Why do you say that the JLT does nothing for performance? Does that also include PMAS, Roush CAI, etc? I mean, I've watched Dyno videos that clearly show HP gains with the JLT/PMAS + tune.

Either way, I snagged an SCT / Lund/ PMAS combo and really looking forward to installing it. Thanks beefcake!

I went PMAS and Lund. No regrets and the car pulls a LOT harder than stock. If you have a 6r80, the trans tune with Lund is worth it alone.

Check out this link. Chief Ford engineer even states that CAIs don't improve performance at all. Even a canned SCT tune will improve performance. Even more so with a custom one from Lund, VMP, etc.

I'm not an expert but I compared the 3 tuners you mentioned before purchasing the SCT X4 and learned the following:

Frpp tool can only be purchased in 1 of 3 packages Ford Performance sells and its extremely limited. The reason ppl buy this is so they dont have to worry about losing their warranty.

The Ngauge: you can flash, datalog, and monitor, its better looking, and you can either use a dash mount, or you can install it in one of the center vents
If you wanna do anything else w/ regards to tuning, you have to get the supporting tuner to do the changes.

SCT IMO is much more cost effective than the others and does a lot more than the others, it allows you to flash, monitor, datalog, and you can do a ton of customization yourself such as change gear ratio, revs per mile, tire size, advance/retard timing, etc.

The SCT device is not as aesthetically pleasing as the Ngauge. Also, if you want to datalog, you have to use a laptop w/ the device

After doing a comparison, I felt I'd get the " Best Bang for your Buck" with the SCT X4. I bought it w/out any 3rd party tunes (i.e. Bama, VMP, etc.) and started with the most basic mod (Airaid CAI) and the the preloaded tune that came with the device worked great.

I'm @ work so I cant watch teh video, but any performance gained from an CAI depend son many things;

How restrictive the OEM intake is.
How/Where the inlet is palced.
How the tube orientates the MAF. (I've seem MAF positioning drop 10WHP on a dyno then when flipped again return that 10WHP)
Any other mods that let the engine flow more air.

It's very possible that on a STOCK car a CAI does little to nothing, but it may help at the top end but not on a dyno. For example if you block off the shaker on a 2003/4 Mach1 the back half of the 1/4 mile looses time/MPH vs if you open it back up again.
