These are easy plug jobs... grab yourself a $4 kit with the glue, tools, and plugs from any local auto store, walmart, amazon, etc. and have it on hand in the glove box.
Those ford techs just wanted to sell a tire, that's BS...even tirerack and discounttiredirect with their road hazzard programs would have paid a local tire place to plug it before fully replacing.

not sure if there is a Autozone or Kragens in CA but they should have a easy repair kit as well, cost is about right 4-10 bucks. Takes less then 10 minutes to do the job.

Some tread punctures can't be repaired if the hole is elongated or the object goes in at a steep angle (not perpendicular to the tread).

Which is kinda how the OP photo looks, although obviously the screw bent over while driving.

Tell me more about road hazard warranty. Does that come with our new vehicles? BTW I heard about the Discount Tire hazard offer (on any tires you take to them).
