Depreciation is typically the big cost, but as yet is an unknown quantity. Traditionally, the big engine variants depreciate more quickly, but who knows.

Do we also factor in all the gratuitous crap (accessories, mods etc.) we've bought (or will be buying) into the equation?!

I have a Ecoboost Premium. Last July I went on a trip to northern Michigan with my wife and two grandaughters of about 650 miles. When I got back the computer said that we had averaged 32.9 per U.S. gallon I always use 93 octane premimum fuel. I heard you lose 49 hp on 87 octane.

Good figures there.
As well as our gallons being slightly bigger than yours, our fuel grades are slightly different too. Standard is 95 & Super is 97 (some places offer 99+)
Roughly your 91 is our 95 & your 93 is our 97

the 'official' mpg figures are in the latest brochure and I think they're slightly more realistic than the ones found in VW brochures.
What you'll find is that large displacement engines typically fair very well on the NEDC fuel economy tests, as it was those types of engines the test was originally developed for.
