If your stressing noise levels/changes that much, I don't think an exhaust change is something you would like. Also the power difference is so minuscule you'd never be able to tell. I have dyno'd the car stock and after all my mods and will once again since the tune is finalized from Adam (shop is closed for the holidays). There is not a drone but it does get a little bit louder.

I removed the resonator on mine and replaced the mufflers with Magna Flow 14" oval mufflers.

At idle and cruising it is no louder than stock and has zero interior drone. Accelerating at WOT I get a nice deep roar, louder than stock but not at all objectionable. I get nothing but compliments on the sound even from the V8 guys.

For a daily driver I think it is perfect. When I feel the need to scare women and make small children cry I take the Barracuda out for a ride.

resonator delete sound level

Dave, your exhaust sounds like just what I'm after. Just a small, only mildly intrusive sound increase at idle and cruise, but appreciably more guttsy sound when I stomp on it. I figure that a little better flowing exhaust will also help me gain back the pound of boost I lost when I installed my new intercooler, which doesn't flow quite as easily as stock. Improving the intake should also help offset that mild boost deficit. I'll look into those 14" oval Magnaflows. Can I ask what they cost and do you have any more specifics on their part number.

I bought everything but the tips from Summit Racing. Don't recall the part number but they were the 14" oval straight through style, center in, offset out, 2.25", 409 stainless (don't care about the polished look of 304 so I saved the bucks). As I recall they were $79 each but I am not sure, I had a $50 Summit bucks coupon I used. The Y pipe was also 409 stainless and was about $30. I also got a 4' section of 409 stainless pipe for $20.

The tips I got off Amazon, double wall slash cut polished 304 stainless in 2.5" ( 2.5 fits perfectly over the 2.25 outlet on the muffler).

The one thing I would change if I was to do it over is pick up an S bend section of pipe. The down pipe from the turbo doesn't land in the center of the tunnel, a couple inch S bend would have lined everything up better.

Took me about 2 hours to cut out the mufflers and resonator and weld all back up with the new parts. If you can't do it yourself plan on paying someone a couple of hours of labor.

Thanks Dave. Your setup is a lot cheaper than paying Magnaflow $1099 for their street catback. I wonder if you'd have put the Flowmaster Y pipe on it if it would have lined up better

Not sure why a different Y would have made a difference. I put the Y on at the back. The pipes from the mufflers were attached to the Y and I used the straight pipe to go from the Y back to the down pipe. The S pipe would have created a clean jog.

All the cat back systems are outrageous in price. The prices I paid had profit for Summit and Magna Flow in them so you know the materials for an entire cat back aren't much over $100.

I purchased an entire header back system with an X pipe for my Barracuda from Summit for less than $300. Granted it's aluminized steel but 409 stainless would only add $100 - $200 to the price.

Dave, your resonator-delete (with Y-pipe welded-in) and the pair of Magaflows (with stainless double-wall 4" tips) works exactly as you stated above. I had mine done for me a local muffler shop (total cost a little over $420). I agree also it sounds better.... still near-stock idle and cruise, but a bit deeper with more "presence" IMHO. On throttle, a more pleasant (and deep) engine growl which actually sounds pretty good....... sounds more like a sports car engine should and not a Camry. Overall sound not too different from many street catback kits for sale.

By the way, the resonator-delete also serves another function: it removes a restrictive (and over-heated) element of the exhaust (remember the recall for exhaust heat/insulation mod) also a component coming right after the also restrictive and hot downpipe/catalytic converter. The Y-pipe allows the hot gasses to flow very quickly to the two rear Magnaflows (with also less restriction) thus giving an overall better-managed exhaust flow.

Highly recommend this approach. :D

Replacing resonator with Muffler.

Would replacing the resonator with a hi-flow 2.5" muffler than going into two straight pipes(no rear mufflers) be more beneficial for weight and sound rather than Y pipe with two mufflers?

single muffler exhaust

See the Gibson Mustang EcoBoost catback exhaust. Late Model Restoration sells it. There's also a sound clip of it on U-tube. It's a single muffler mounted where the factory resonator was, followed by an x-pipe (why I don't know)and going into dual back straight pipes, then tips. It does save some weight. IMO it doesn't sound bad in terms of sound quality, but it is reported to be loud by customers who have purchased it. Also, such a system is prone to letting more noise in the cab of the vehicle. Of course, you could always substitute some other big free flowing muffler in the same location if you want something quieter, and as long as it fits properly, and add some muffler deletes back of the axle.

I've read about both variants for months now (before I made my decision to go Y-pipe + dual mufflers). Both approaches seem to be very similar in effect as well as sound (that is, resonator-delete with hi-flow muffler(s)); however, the dual Magnaflows may be a bit quieter off-throttle (like the "Street" catback kit) I chose the Y-pipe config to open the flow out of the hot downpipe/cat conv to help in dissipating the heat better...... but I think both configs help here. I don't think the weight is much of a deciding factor though. Hope this helps, but in-person is best for hearing actual sound.

Deleting your resonator isn't going to net you any noticeable performance gains but what it will get you is a whole heap of drone. The EcoBoost 4 is never going to sound like a V8 but it can sound good in its own way with the right system. Make sure you shop around and listen to as many systems as you can in person. If you have any questions, please shoot us a PM or give us a call.

I had it installed several days ago and as for drone I don't hear anything that is obnoxious. I'm considering installing new mufflers to original tubing. Haven't decided what yet. Quote me if I'm wrong a cat back system comes with a y pipe to replace the resonator. I'm not looking for anything loud just a a little growl. I have listen to numerous videos of different systems but nothing has my interest.

False... I have no drone at all I hear this all the time but with a good delete and muffler set up you can get amazing sound and no drone.

Wrong. I don't have any drone and get compliments on my exhaust daily. Maybe this is the case with your exhaust as that would be the only exhaust you could speak for.

I agree with the posters responding to the above statement from Magnaflow.... the resonator-delete (replaced with Y-pipe) is very common in many catback kits. The deeper exhaust note is a pleasant improvement to stock, and with my dual (Magnaflow) mufflers, not overly loud on throttle, but definitely has a bit more engine "presence"....... sounds more "sporty" vs "ecoboxy". If there is any drone at highway cruise speeds, I can't hear it, but many who do this mod also don't seem to hear any. I think the kits are a good mod, but exhaust shop/custom works too. ;)
