People that call the police for every accident drive me nuts. If it's non-injury, exchange info and call your damn insurance company (you know, that agency you pay to handle these matters). Only thing worse is when people dont move their damn vehicles out of traffic and screw everyone else that shares the world with them.

Do not let anyone but an insurance approved agency repair the vehicle. You'll regret everything about the situation if you dont. Do not report it as a hit and run, it wasnt. You pass the buck along to all of us when you report it a hit and run. The value of your car will not change from a minor accident.

And if they don't have insurance? If they're belligerent? I much prefer having the guy with a badge and gun there to broker the transaction. People can be serious assholes when they know they're flat wrong but don't want to deal with the consequences.

And WTF is an "insurance approved agency"? Laws in your state must be f'ed up if you can't take it to the shop you trust to repair it the right way.

I agree with those who say call the cops and get a report on any accident. A lot of people simply don't have integrity anymore and they are not going to do the right thing unless they have no choice. Getting a report gives them no choice if the officer judges that the person that hit you was indeed at fault. The fact that this guy didn't give the OP insurance info is red flag enough. OP, I feel for you and wish you a speedy resolution to all of this.

If someones not hurt all the police do is make both partys change info,i guess the good part of calling the police is if one partys license or tags are jacked up,then ur good to go.When someone dont want to give me their info or says hey man let me pay for this out my pocket, then im calling the police. If they give all info and insurance checks out i let the insurance co work it out.

Depends on traffic situation. If the cars aren't able to pull over and allow traffic its regular flow, the cops are needed regardless. I've had 3 fender benders with no injuries in my years. 2 included cops, 1 for CYA and 1 for traffic reasons. The other one we were both able to move our cars and make an exchange of info w/ no problems.

There are no issues taking it wherever you want however, the shops your insurance company recommend have met standards. If you have a fantastic shop, excellent but if you dont have a lot of body work done or a relationship with a body shop (the 90+ percentile), use the insurance preferred shops (they do quality work).

As for whether or not they have insurance, it makes absolutely no difference what-so-ever. Insurance companies arent dumb and they dont shaft their customers. They'll investigate the situation along with the damage and make a determination based on the evidence available. If you have an aggressive party, do your best to exchange info and move along. If you want to stay and potentially escalate the situation, have at it. If it's a non-injury accident (like the incident posted), good luck getting them out there. I'm from CA and if you want to wait for the Police or CHP, go right ahead (hope you have a pillow in the vehicle).

Get a police report to set what happened in stone. If someone backs into your car they can say a few days later then you hit them and now they have neck pain and they're suing you for personal injury. Always get a damn police report or have a good dash cam

I'm probably not going to report it, even if they refuse to pay. It will count as an accident, and I don't want that on the car fax if I can avoid it. It will bring down the price of the car in the future if I ever want to sell it.
I feel your pain Raoh, about 3 weeks ago I was ran off the road and had to hit a curb to avoid being hit by an elderly person in a truck not paying attention. Sadly, like you, fixed everything out of pocket so it wouldn't be on the insurance

That sucks...!!!! Should have dialed 911.

I have been sitting still and hit from behind TWICE in the last 3 years in my wife's '12 Fusion. Dialed 911 before even turning the car off. Both times the girls who hit me were at my door while 911 was still on the phone.

I probably should have called the police instead of not doing it, looks like I may need the entire bumper replaced, it's bulging out on the sides, and when you open the trunk, there's a bump there that can't be seen from the outside. I am furious, we will see what happens tomorrow, I have a picture of his license. Worst case scenario, I will just have to pay to have the bumper replaced myself. I'm just sad more than anything. I'll see what he will want to do on the repairs of the bumper. I think I will have to replace the whole bumper actually.

The bumper cover will more than likely just get repaired (which is fine) but what's going on under it is what will add up fast. Like I said, give your insurance company the info you have on the other driver and let them do what you're paying them for.

I have the information of the friend, not even of the driver, so I can't do that. I just have the driver's name, because he refused to give me any information, and being that it was 3 am, and there were 4 guys in the car, I felt it best I didn't push anything.

That's all you need to tell them, they will take care of you. I promise. Insurance companies are exceptionally easy to work with when something happens to your vehicle.
