can anyone recommend a DIY solution to re-fitting stock mufflers that have been previously cut off to make way for after market axle backs?

I’m considering sleeve clamps similar to the ones that join the stock exhaust system between the resonator and the cats, but the cut point of the mufflers is immediately after a bend, so I’d be concerned that it might not sit/seal properly.

Clamps or get them welded back on by a garage?

Why not buy a complete stock system, there are loads available. You could have mine, its only done a few miles and won't be going back on.

there's one sat at stoneacre doncaster 2 of the guys on here bought their cars from there and had them swap on after markets before pickup so their old ones are just sat in the bays

Exactly Dave...I bet 90% of the members on here have got their old exhausts laying about.
Its gotta be easier and probs more cost effective than paying a garage to sleeve and weld the old boxes back on.

indeed
although makes you wonder which axle backs actually cut on a radius rather than before or after it so you can get a straight connection for a sleeve.

Thanks for the offer, but transporting it would be an issue. I’m swapping my car and want to keep the axle backs for the new one but can’t send my car back to the dealership without mufflers!

Believe it or not, it’s the Ford Racing ones! The cut point on the stock system is just before the last bend before it goes into the muffler, so you leave behind a straight section to connect to. Although there’s not a lot of it and nothing in that region looks perfectly straight. I think it’s the same cut point for most 2.5” axle backs. 3” systems cut just after the first bend out of the resonator, giving you a fighting chance if re-instating.

I used sleeve clamps to fit the back boxes on mine, I found the best way to fit them is to fit them to the bend 1st that way you can get them on far enough, make sure you tighten them up before fittings to the straight pipe as you need to pull on the back boxes a bit to bend the pipe slightly

Thanks. Which sleeves did you use (if you can remember)?

Sorry I don’t, all I can remember is they weren’t the tightest fitting ones as they didn’t have a pair of those and they would of been to tight to make the bend, I took muffler in to try pipe size

Jord - Chris and Dave Lowriderlincoln and Hinch are right .....there are loads of stock pipes kicking about - for free

(although you are also correct that transport might be an issue)

Chris (Lowriderlincoln) also lives in West Yorkshire!

I also have one you can have for free (full catback) - but I am in Doncaster

Surely for the cost to hire a van - it is worth considering?

Thanks for all your advice and offers. Had no idea exhaust would fit in the car with the seats down. I know I fit a door in recently, but thought the width of the exhausts would be prohibitive!

I’ll speak to the garage and see if they will swap the mufflers for me. Failing that I might try the sleeve clamps, as that would be the easiest solution IF I can get the right type. 3rd option will be to tap someone up is wanting rid of a complete stock system, just don’t fancy fitting that again on my own. I’ve done it before, it can be done, but it hurts!
