So now that the Mustang is getting IRS, a "potentially" lighter platform, and a small turbo 4 option, I'm curious what everyone thinks about a rally Mustang.

I know the top dogs in Rally are mostly econoboxes with AWD, but IIRC there's RWD classes. Also, I've noticed quite a few GT86 rally builds and heard something about a rally-prepped factory GT86 in the future.

Interesting? Dumb idea? "GO HOME YOU DIRT LOVER!"??

I guess my question really is why aren't there any Mustangs that rally? Is it because of the SLA? Will we see more 2015s delve into rally since it has IRS?

As far as road rally and any road racing, it seems the Mustang is and will continue to be competitive.

The answer might just be that RWD rally is pretty nonexistent and the only reason GT86s are trying it is because it's a new car and people want to test the platforms ability to adapt to different motorsports.

It wasn't that long ago that Ford featured 2 guys in Rally in Mustangs... It was during the 2010 launch and one of them was a Rally America National Champion in RWD in a Mustang. Here is the video:

Ford is suppose to be putting the Mustang's 2.3 in a Focus ST, adding AWD & calling it a Focus RS.

Or, better yet, the Lincoln version of the s550, is a 5-door AWD.

That was a cool video.

It's the weight... it's just too much. And way too little traction. And you can't beat the lack of traction, and the Mustang has always had traction problems. The best rally cars have serious AWD systems.
I've run into two rally mustangs in SCCA Pro Rally and Rally America over the years. The first was a Ford engineer, who had a V-8 79 model that he updated over the years. He did ok and had fun. I've got a few pictures and video somewhere that I need to dig out one of these days.
