R Model chassis number question

Yes indeed, a real beauty and a unique story to go along with it. That car, although not a '15, is even more rare in that it is probably a PP as pointed out. To me, that is a very collectable car. Keep it original and enjoy it for the rest of your life.

BTW PP003 is a Triple Yellow R and identical to your car with the Black OTT stripes and Black roof.

Prior to seeing that car I was not a big fan of TY but once I saw that car in person I was hooked on the color combination and really liked the Black roof option as well.

PP003 was at Mecum Indy this year (but did not sell I believe... bid to $65K)... do you know the owner?... know where the car is now?, if it is still looking for a new owner?

I have 17 TY GT350, black stripes, black roof & electronics... love the car but would like to upgrade to an R version and this would be a cool chassis to own from a long term collect-ability perspective.

TY R's are pretty rare as everyone knows... but they look amazing in person, shame there weren't more made.

TY Shelby's in general are very rare for sure especially in R model form.

Just an amazing coincidence that only 22 TY R's in total were produced each year for both the 2016MY and 2017MY with each year having only 2 Base models built.

In total there were 526 R's built for the 2016MY and 942 for the 2017MY.

If you are serious about PP003 and if it was at Indy this past May and did not sell I am sure that Mecum can locate the owner if the car has not sold already.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I am going to reach out to Ford VOGO and see if they can tell me how they racked up the 9,900 miles before selling it to the public (test mule, corp exec car, etc). Will update if I find anything.

Most of this was explained in post 14 but will try to explain it again and hope that it makes more sense.

GR014 and your car GR015 are very early regular production R models with whoever assigning the chassis plate number for your car at FR obviously messed up by assigning chassis number G0089 instead of GR015 but certainly very cool as it replicates the VIN just as was done with all of the 2015 GT350/R's.

I would suggest that your R model may be the only 2016 GT350/R that has a chassis plate number that actually replicates the VIN.

With respect to PP003 this is a Pilot Production car and gets used mostly for static display venues but some of these PP cars do get driven at track events and other venues. All Pilot Production cars such as PP003 get assigned a separate VIN sequence which ends in "200139" whereas GR014 and GR015 end in 520081 and 520089 respectively. Not sure if you noticed the difference in VIN sequence?

Hopefully this further explanation helps and again congrats on owning one of the very few Base R models out there.

PS: Will you at some time change the stripes back to the original color of White as looked pretty good IMO?

Obviously another 2016 Pilot Production car and as you mentioned was built 2 months even before all of the 2015MY GT350/R's.

I really like to color combination and but unfortunately not a matching numbers car.

Having said that with a brand new FPC engine installed and if Ford supplies a full power train warranty with it and if bought at the right price this is a cool car.

Very cool. I'd love to have tracked down PP003 had I saw this earlier but my wife would kick me to the curb with what we already have coming over the next year (Edge ST, 500, Bronco or Ranger Raptor).

Sorry for delay in reply. The previous owner removed the original white stripes ,had the car paint corrected and completely wrapped in Xpel. He then applied the flat black OTT stripes on top of the Xpel. The Xpel is amazing stuff as its saved the paint from chips and scratches more than once. Not sure I can remove the black stripes without bringing the Xpel with it. But, to answer your question, yes, at some point I will be changing it back to original white OTT stripes when I have the car re-wrapped.

It's been a long time since I updated this thread, but I've recently gone back down the rabbit hole on my car and I think we've (me and ChaptGPT) found something significant.

Quick refresher: I own the Base R discussed earlier in this thread:

VIN: 1FATP8JZ0G5520089
Physical chassis plaque: G0089
Ford Performance COA: GR015
Production date: 8/3/2015

The original window sticker shows it was sold to Ford Motor Company/VOGO and shipped to the FoMoCo Quality Test Fleet.

A year ago I met Eric Ladner, Ford's Voodoo engine program supervisor, during a track day NOLA Motorsports Park. He looked up my VIN in Ford's internal system, told me it had been an NVP (New Vehicle Program) test vehicle, and actually showed me some of the reports generated during Ford's use of the car.

There is also contemporary history in this very thread. In 2016, JRoman recalled G0089 as one of the Ford-owned Rs sold through Manheim with about 9,900 miles, reportedly bought by Ray Skillman Ford and offered on eBay for around $95K. PP0001 confirmed at the time that G0089 had indeed been Ford-owned.

But here's the part that has become much more interesting.

Back in 2016/2017, PP0001 remembered Ford building a pair of unusual early 2016 Rs for internal/executive use whose chassis numbers did not contain the normal "R" and instead corresponded to their VIN numbers.

He remembered the pair as G0089 and G0091, while also saying at the time that he could be wrong.

I had essentially dismissed the G0091 story because despite extensive searching I can't find any independent evidence that G0091 ever existed.

However, we've now found G0090.

And G0090's VIN is:

1FATP8JZ7G5520090

Compare that to mine:

G0089 — 1FATP8JZ0G5520089
G0090 — 1FATP8JZ7G5520090

They are consecutive VINs.

Even better, G0090 is documented contemporaneously.

On September 16, 2015, TrackMustangsOnline member 12Boss posted that Ford personnel were at Michigan Tech with G0090 and gave him a ride in the car. He said it had obviously been run hard.

In that same 2015 thread, jmbboss302 stated:

"G0090 appears to be a MP1 Build, produced on July 31, 2015."

So G0090 wasn't something invented years later in a production spreadsheet. People were calling this Ford-operated car G0090 in September 2015.

This makes me wonder whether PP0001's memory of the pair was correct, but after a year or two the second chassis number was simply remembered as 0091 instead of 0090.

And there's another part of PP0001's old posts that looks remarkably prescient now.

In this thread in 2016 he said it was his understanding that Ford was still debating how the R chassis numbers should be designated around June/July 2015.

Then, after I posted my Ford COA showing GR015 in 2018, PP0001 suggested that Ford may have assigned my car another chassis number after the fact, once the decision had been made to use the "GR" designation.

That is very close to where this new research is leading me.

My current theory is that G0089 and G0090 were ordered/serialized during that chassis-number transition and legitimately received VIN-correlated G numbers before Ford finalized the GR### convention.

My car was then incorporated into Ford's final production accounting as GR015, explaining why the physical car says G0089 while Ford Performance says GR015.

We initially wondered whether G0090 therefore became GR016. It did not. GR016 is a separate car with a different VIN. Likewise, the yellow/black Electronics Package GR014 is VIN ...0081.

So the GR numbers clearly weren't simply following VIN sequence.

That leaves one very interesting unanswered question:

What does Ford Performance call G0090?
If anyone knows the owner or whereabouts of VIN 1FATP8JZ7G5520090, I'd love to see:

• its actual dash chassis plaque
• Ford Performance COA
• original window sticker
• Base vs. Electronics Package configuration
• any documentation of its Ford use

If the physical car says G0090 but its Ford Performance COA assigns it another GR### number, that would be extraordinarily strong evidence that these two consecutive cars were caught in the chassis-number transition.

@PP0001 — if you're still around, I'd particularly appreciate your thoughts.

Looking back at your old posts, I think you may have remembered something important about these being a pair. Is it possible that the second car you remembered as G0091 was actually G0090?

And do you happen to remember 12Boss or jmbboss302, or where the information that G0090 was an MP1 build produced July 31, 2015 came from?

After all these years, I think G0090 may finally explain why my car has been G0089 on the dash but GR015 in Ford's records since it was built.
