My assumption is that the flame throwing components are completely separated from the ICE and its related components.

For flame throwing, you need spark plugs and fuel plumbed into the ends of the tail pipes.

At least that's the way it was always done back in the day. I definitely wouldn't try to pour so much fuel into the engine that some unburned fuel makes it all the way to the tail pipe. The excess would wash the cylinder walls and contaminate the oil immediately. Your engine would die fairly rapidly if it was treated that way.
