Hi guys, this is my second car (first brand new car), so I'm completely new to the process of buying new cars. I had a 2004 Sentra base with manual doors and windows before this. I have a few questions about taking delivery.

1. When I initially signed a sales agreement, I signed it with a $2000 ESP of 5 years 50,000miles/80,000km. I now know I'm being ripped off, can I take this off before taking delivery? I'd like to go to flood ford or troy to get the warranty.

2. Say if I found something wrong with the car, like panels not aligned, etc., can I refuse delivery until my dealer fixes it before I accept?

3. If I can refuse until fixed for the above questions, what things should I look for on top of misaligned panels?

Thanks for all your help in advance! My cars out for delivery, I live across the border three hours away in Canada, I should be expecting it anytime

1. You have 30 days to receive a full refund for the Ford ESP. This is written in the terms and conditions. You will be charged a fee for processing, however. The fee is usually 50 or 75 dollars depending on your state.

Refusal of delivery

You most certainly can refuse to take delivery. I just did it. The car I had put a deposit on had a scratch in the front bumper that you could feel with your finger nail, Fine swirl scratches all over, hood and trunk out of alignment.
I told them to fix everything and I would take it. A week later they told me it was all set. When they changed the alignment on the hood and trunk they made other areas that previously lined up misaligned. It also still had swirls in the paint. I asked for my deposit back and walked.

Did you get your deposit back or did they finally decide to give you the car fixed to your needs?

That sales agreement is not binding, since you have not taken delivery of the car. Or that is the way it is in Texas anyway. So if you want the ESP just at a cheaper price, make them match whatever offer you have elsewhere or just take it out and sign a new contract.

Think about it, your first payment is due between 30-45 days from the contract date. Well if you sign a contract today and haven't taken delivery and you won't be getting your car for another 25 days, that means you will have a payment due right after delivery.

You should have to sign a finalized contract at time of delivery. And you can refuse delivery if it is not up to snuff. That goes from the detail of the dealership, to not having a full tank of gas, to factory blemishes.

Yes, they gave me a check and I was on my way. You need not worry about this. Your the final decision maker. If your not happy with the car, ask for your deposit back.

Im glad to hear that I can refuse delivery if they do not have the car up to new specs, though from what I know, if I cancel my contract, i lose my deposit and have to pay interest for however long the car stays on the lot not sold. I hope they just repair the car instead of pulling that off.

Honestly I think you may be worrying before there is need. The cars I have seen with issues were built Mid Feb. You will probably be fine. I would love to hear how it turns out.

So what are you going to do now? Look at another make/model or find another Mustang?

CHerub,
Are you purchasing from a Canadian or U.S. dealer. If U.S. which state and dealer. I have never heard of signing a committed contract to order a car. But things may be different in Canada. You need to ask for specifics for your location and dealer. Sleazy dealers have been know to mislead you on what your real rights are. GET A SECOND OPINION. In the US anyway, you usually do not sign a 'contract' until there is a car for you to buy on site!

And yes, you can takes hours to go over the car with a fine tooth comb before siging the contract and before giving them a check. They will 'ask you to sign first and they will hold it until you are satisfied'. But I would not and did not do that. After I inspected car, I told them the hood needed to be adjusted before I would finalize the deal. That way they were motivated to get it done right away. They will tell you to just bring it in soon and they will take care of it. Personally I recommend NOT doing this. They can be a lot more wishy washy on what they can do to fix after the sale is complete. Many people do not sign and accept a new car until it has been fixed to the buyers satisfaction. It is common, so do not feel weird about making clear that is your intention, in a nice and courteous way of course.

Ask your dealer specifically if your deposit is refundable if the car comes in damaged or with problems. If they say it is not, then ask to speak to a sales manager or even the general sales mgr.

It will probably be fine, but what ever issue the car may have, you will get more satisfaction getting it fixed before you commit.
Good luck.
