The other question for those WITH the 401a and included sub: Is there an additional option in the SYNC3 stereo menu to adjust the sub output?
there is not, and I find that ridiculous :frusty:

When you say you have pulled the carpet - are you referring to just the trunk floor carpet OR the entire passenger side carpeted trunk liner where the sub would be mounted?

I would suspect if the sub harness exists, it comes past the back seat into the trunk on passenger side - either following the inner rear wheel well, under the rear deck or somewhere near the taillight area.
Pulled the entire passenger side carpet all the way to the rear seat, no open plugs anywhere. There is a module on the passenger side behind the carpet with 2 plugs going to it, but not exactly sure what it controls.

I bought a factory sub with all the brackets. but stopped the install when I found out no factory pig tail, I to have the 9 speaker shaker system... I am not wanting to add an aftermarket sub, but after thinking for a while, I may install it and power it up with an old alpine 600/2 sub amp and run the factory sub until it blows.

Interested in selling the sub and brackets?

I have a 401A coupe and replaced the OEM sub with an equivalent sized Kicker, powered by a compact JL amp. It sounds incredible. Nothing compared to the dual or ported 10s I used to roll wth, but it is clean and has depth.

OEM sub

I have installed the OEM sub in my base Mustang GT.

Should be a similar setup for the Premium setup with sub.

Would you guys like the info I've learned from this setup? I'll try to explain the best I can because I had a pro shop do the install.

Yes, I'd like to go this route as well to keep everything looking factory. Any advice you can give is appreciated.

You will also need the replace the stock subwoofer amp. Use the ALPINE KTP-190U. About $100. It is nearly identical to the stock amp. It will bolt in place of the stock amp. You will need to remove the subwoofer driver to install the wiring. Since the Alpine amp only has 2 wire for the subwoofer you will need to wire the subwoofer in series (?), I think that's the terminology used. The subwoofer needs 4 wires connecting to it and the Alpine amp only has 2 wires for connection.

The Alpine amp was connected to the rear speakers for the signal and the power wire just simply went to the open subwoofer fuse in the passenger kick-panel. Cross-over the amp at 100Hz

The result is more bass mainly at high volume. This will not blow out the windows or rock the boat. It is intended to give you more bass at higher volume is the best way I can describe it.

I also used the instructions from the JL Audio site for their own subwoofer f or this model car. They are pretty good.

I think total cost was about $500-$600 with the Pro install. I know people with just assume just go with the JL Audio setup (and I agree it's a much better power setup) but when you talk about the outlay in cash this is the most feasible now. The JL Audio setup in $800 for the enclosure and then $300 for the amp and then $200-$400 for install? You are close to $1500 at this point.

Please ask questions if you need to.

Thanks for the info. Why did you have to replace the factory sub amp?

The factory amp uses proprietary connectors and they do not exist when you order the car without the Shaker sub. People have pulled back the trunk & side covers and the wiring does not exist to plug in the Shaker amp.

So, if I have the 401a package with the stock sub and amp, could I essentially get the upgraded sub and use it to replace the stock one? Do you think there'd be much benefit to doing that?

Why not just install an aftermarket sub and amp. Way more power and cheaper. But it does leave more room.
