That's a reality of the business and the market. A dealership would be foolish to appraise a car based on the future. We will appraise some cars if we know the order will be filled in 6-10 weeks and will account for that in our appraisal. The customer then has that same 6-10 weeks to sell it themselves if they choose, potentially fetching more money than we offered.
There's a difference between an honest devaluing of a few hundred bucks due to more mileage and time elapsing, but when you're talking to the tune of 20-25% of the original offer with little change in mileage and no mechanical or cosmetic changes as was the deal with one of my friends you're well beyond that and have ventured into dishonest business deals.

I'm just saying beware of shady dealerships that will use that leverage of a deposit check to really give you a raw deal on a trade-in. Sure selling it on the side is always an option, but I'm trying to give those people who don't want to fool with that and just want to do a trade in a heads up on what could happen.

Over here car valuation software enables any dealer to make exact predictions of future trade-in values (based on normal wear during the waiting period). If dealers would refuse to commit to future trade-in values they wouldn't sell any car, since 95% of all new car sales are based on factory ordering.

Dealers adding "market adjustments" to msrp prices would be ridiculed and put to shame in the media. No buyer would fall for that.

Just one tip that might cause some people a bit of trouble.

If you have plans on trading in your current car watch out because dealerships aren't going to promise you whatever trade in value they quoted but for a few weeks. It will take longer for you to order and receive your vehicle. And most dealerships require a deposit to order.

In short, the car arrives, they have your deposit check, and could lower their offer on your trade in putting you over a barrel.

I'm not saying that every dealer would pull something like that, just that its a possibility.
Yup, that's what happened to me when I special ordered my 12'. They got me good.
