Hey everyone, I know trying to diagnose a sound over the internet is nearly impossible. Just hoping someone had a similar issue. Driving me nuts....

No matter what gear it is, when Im say merging onto the high way, right around 3800-4200 rpm at part throttle I hear this metallic rattle. Best way I could explain it is it sounds like if I had a exhaust clamp that was just rattling on the exhaust, and not tight. I have resonator deletes so I was thinking it was the heat shield on the catback but those seem tight. It does it with the valves opened and closed.

To me, it sounds like its coming from the passenger rear of the car, but even Im having a difficult time figuring out exactly where it is.

I did check my exhaust, everything is tight. The catback mounts on the rear subframe are also tight. Checked the valves in the mufflers and theyre not flopping around.

Ah yes. The classic ā€˜buzzing’ sound. It’s been mentioned multiple times on this forum if you search ā€˜buzzing’. I’ll help you along with this thread. https://www.mustang6g.com/forums/threads/engine-transmission-plate-noise-fix.115718/
I’ve mentioned it before, it’s a good start and will take you down the worm-hole of hyperlinks as you attempt to diagnose a sound via terms like, ā€˜pie tin’ and ā€˜a plastic bag at high speed’. I’ve clicked most of the hyperlinks and deciphering numerous noises through words, have chalked it up as the trans plate in the attached link. It’s annoying, but personally, I find it as a non threatening issue that I’ll get around to fixing when I get it on a lift. Best of luck on your quest and let us know if you find that that little buzzer!

Thanks Teej! I actually did come across that, forgot to mention. I tried moving it but it felt solid.... Maybe Ill just grab some dynamat regardless and see if that helps!

I’m sure everything under the car is tight, but never hurts to put a wrench on it. I’ve learned an TON about our cars from crazy track rats, to backroad carvers, to the Sunday driving Miss Daisy. These FPC engines have been documented on this forum for creating all sorts harmonics, vibrations and noise that most people (like myself) aren’t accustomed to. I still can’t believe Ford signed off on making these things. And I still can’t believe I got one in the garage…

I bought this butyl off amazon, CANOPUS Car Sound Deadening Mat, 80 mil 5 sqft, Pack of 5 Sheets, Butyl Sound Deadener. Then use a piece of cardboard and slide it up there to trace it out the transmission to make your template. This butyl is the perfect size and thickness that you can trace your template on 1 sheet and slide it all the way up to cover the entire plate.

Also check rocker panels….The push pins on the rocker panels/side spiltters are known to come loose and cause an annoying rattle

I used dynamat to almost eliminate the noise. Unfortunately, the correct fix is to seperate the transmission from the engine and replace the sandwich plate. I opted not to do that because the sound is not a mechanical deficiency. The thought of a tech tearing the car apart for a noise makes me cringe.

"Putting a wrench to it" won't solve your problem. The plate needs to be replaced.

dynamat solved my issue. exact same noise happened to me in 2nd and 3rd when the car was up to temp in that same RPM range. a small piece of dynamat on that plate solved my issues and is much better than taking the car apart to replace a faulty part with another faulty part.

Incase anyone happens to have something similar, I figured it out. The passenger side exhaust hanger snapped. Which makes sense cause I was positive I could hear it at the right rear of the car. Not sure how I missed it when I went over everything

Glad you found the source. I was going to suggest the exhaust dampeners. My passenger side came loose and sounded a good deal like what you were describing. I’ve had the rocker push pin rattle too as well as a few from the interior that I’ve managed to stop.
