Ya know my first thought was wouldn't look good would be like a throw back when I had one on my Datsun 240 ZX but by golly it looks pretty good and goes just fine with the flow of the car.

What was the original purpose of these on older cars? Pseudo-Sun shade?

I personally despise these on anything built past 1987 and although the paint looks well applied, it's jacking up any aero benefits your swing was providing you.

Well, maybe. I thought the S197 ones looked ok. The S550 body shape isn't as conducive to having these on the back, and yes, as you said, the spoiler is pretty much deactivated. Or maybe not - at around 100 mph or so, mother nature might step in and free the louvres to fly away and restore full function to the spoiler.
