When I picked up my 2018 PP1 in November 2020 I (somehow, amazingly) failed to realize the presence of both the wrench and "check engine" lights until about an hour into my drive home. I'm mostly sure they weren't on during the test drives, but not too confident. I may eventually post about the experience, but suffice it to say that the dealer has been good and reasonable to work with (not a Ford dealer, and not close).

In any case, when I first checked the code with a handheld ODBII scanner, it came back as P0720... a transmission output speed sensor. I've done some Googling and searching this forum, but came back with more questions than answers - found some indications that it may not exist on the MT82D4. When I took the car to the local Ford dealer, they were pretty confused and I had multiple discussions with the techs, who at one point questioned whether "this transmission came with the car". They even took a video to show me where the sensor "should be" but isn't... and there's not even a hole drilled for the sensor. After some digging, I came up with a theory that, potentially, the MT82D4 doesn't have this sensor at all... but really, I couldn't find anything definitive so I really don't know.

Eventually, they (the local Ford dealer) escalated to Ford directly, and claimed that the car had an aftermarket tune... which they knew I didn't put on the car since I had only been in possession for 3 days. They claimed it had only been started 70 times with the current tune. But since the car drove fine, and it was the holidays (right before Thanksgiving), I took the car back and just haven't made the time to get it back to the dealer. So now I have warranty concerns (I want one).

My initial thought was potentially, with an aftermarket tune, maybe whoever tuned it didn't account for the lack of a sensor on the MT82D4 (again, something I totally invented as a scenario in my mind, no idea if true). In the interim, I contacted Lethal Performance (very helpful) and decided to get an nGauge with a PBD tune, with the thinking that a "good" aftermarket tune may resolve this... got around to putting it in this week. Still throwing the same code. The selling dealer has offered to pay to put the car back with a stock tune, and I have a stock one from PBD that I may try to see if that takes care of it.

In any case - any have insight on this code? This sensor? Should it exist on a 2018+ GT? Anything else this could be?

A huge thank you in advance for any insight and assistance.

Here’s a pic to demonstrate where the sensor “should” be. Clearly it’s not even drilled/milled/whatever out. Any 18+ owners with insight? Thanks!

Perhaps my Google-fu is weak lately, but I'm struggling to find even pictures of the MT-82d4 - anyone have any good references or pics of their own? Thanks in advance for any input.

Not the same year for the 5.0 so don't know if it helps.
This is from the 2020 Service Manual. It doesn't show that sensor.

Now it's just confirming there are no differences between 2018 and the above... but thank you very much JJSSI.

I learned something also, the MT-82 D4 for the 5.0 doesn't look much like the MT-82 D4 for the Eco.
Also my trans has that sensor.

I wish there was a "mind blown" emoji, haha.

My fear is that I'm throwing this code, without this sensor, and something else is going on... it drives great, but still odd.

Maybe check the tag on the transmission for part number and built date to make sure it is the original?
I believe that is it in the upper left of your photo.

Great suggestion, if it's not too cold out (and it's supposed to be here in the northeast this weekend) I'll try to get under there.

Sure sure, rub it in haha!

I actually spent some vacation time on St Simons Island 15+ years ago. An uncle had a vacation property there, loved every second of it. Amazing area.

Forscan edits are an interesting thought... I've been thinking of picking up the cable, no idea why I've been delaying, so I'll just go ahead and order it now. Great idea, thank you.

Minor update - too cold this past weekend to get under, but did order a cable for Forscan use. Any recommendations on what to look for?
