I think its largely tunnel vision - just really focused on the road ahead rather than the cars around... which is probably worse, more likely to have an accident :/
I know I often don't spot specific cars because I'm looking for hazards, not the type of car so I register "car" or "bike" or "truck" rather than "silver Commodore on nice aftermarket rims". I mostly spot specific cars at traffic lights when I'm trapped. Sydney traffic has become so much worse the past decade in terms of driver quality. It's a rare day that I don't have a close call, especially around where I work. It's why I got a dashcam. I could start my own Youtube channel with all the stuff I've got and I only keep the worst examples to show to mates.
