I'd say it was more temperature than anything else if it was 7C (44f) or less. The summer only P-Zeros are treacherous when its that cold. The wet not so much although damp/wet will make it harder for the tires to warm up.

But it seems the traction and default stability controls are not as good as they could be considering the tires Ford puts on them.
Traction and stability won't do squat if the tyres can't grip the road - but as above, would be interested to hear what mode you were in?

Summer tyres on a car driven in wintery conditions (cold/damp). A very light right foot is essential.

Sorry to see the damage Ian - hope you get it sorted quickly (but you may want to edit your post showing the speed and that you were overtaking ie. increasing speed from that point into illegal territory - don't underestimate insurers online research in this respect).

didn't stamp on it, was just accelerating as normal. from 40 ( cameras) along a straight stretch of road.
my mate was behind me in a fiesta ST, i was pulling away from him ever so slightly.
6th gear
was wet, just looked at footage, wipers was on
yea came off of throttle
i believe it was the tyres, to blame,

recovery lorry just turned up to take it to dealer. now I'm without a car until insurance approves repair

Ian,

When you feel like it, let us know what happened. You prob don't feel like talking about it, don't blame you and if you think uit was your own fault, even more so, However, I would like to know.

Did you stamp on it to accelerate?
Was you accelerating at all or just doing a steady 72?
What gear?
Did you hit a wet patch or was it evenly wet?
Did you come straight off the throttle when it lost traction or did tc come in?
In hindsite, do you think you could have done something different to save it>
Do you think you could have/should have done something different to stop it happening?

Sorry, I am not prying but we are all learning these cars. Yeh, I will be honest, I want to learn from your accident, if I can.

Sorry to ask all this and fine if you ignore.

Ian, i feel your pain. we cant wait for parts together. wheres your car going for repairs?:headbonk:
Allens of Romford, they reckon its closest dealer, i wanted to take it to my local dealer, but they don't have an accident repair centre, so not approved.

I know it's been said before Ian but thanks for sharing with us, especially this information. I want to get privacy glass ASAP on delivery but I think I'm gonna prioritise the tyres now. Just for piece of mind. Know it doesn't help you in any way but thanks anyway.
Here's hoping you get a quick turn-around. All the best

Ian,

Sorry to hear this. I've had a quite a few hairy moments with the back end going - even on straights. As has been said, the P Zero's are rubbish in cold or wet conditions. I hope you can get your car back on the road quickly and painlessly. At least you're OK and no-one else is involved.

It's so scary when it happens, I hit water in my Megane on the M40 and ended up going sideways at 90mph, only got away with it as I was the only one about at stupid o'clock, ever since I've really slowed down on the motorways during rain.

Tip from the yanks to know when youve at least got some heat in your tyres. Put up tyre pressure display and when it nudges up a few Lbs or .1 Bar they are at least warm and will offer a bit more grip.

Good idea. I might try line lock to get some heat in - at least 'til I ditch the Pzeros.

Firstly, Ian, really sorry to hear about this.

Secondly, it may well be worth writing to Ford UK and telling them. There have been numerous discussions on these forums about the wisdom of supplying these tyres on these cars in the winter months. I haven't personally checked manufacturer's recommendations but, if others have it right, it sounds like the manufacturer would caution against driving on them. That of course remains arguable but, once customers start experiencing it and notifying Ford, that fixes Ford with a bit more responsibility potentially. We'll all remember the wiring loom, problem. Car catches fire, wiring loom at fault - Ford recall and change to manufacture process no doubt.

So Ian, I'm sorry but I have no idea if reporting it to Ford UK may or may not help you - I sincerely hope it does - but even if it does not, if someone else has the same happen, the fact that you reported and Ford didn't recall or offer a solution might help that second person. Or the third etc.

Again, really quite pissed off for you but hope you are back on the road soon.

Cold psi should be 31-32psi, 34-35psi is when they are luke warm and switched on, drive hard in the dry and you can get them upto 38psi.

Good advice!

Also to point out as someone mentioned about insurers doing their research and editing your post RE: speed at the time. Don't forget that most cars' speedos do over-read a little, so 72mph on the clock may well be a little under 70 in reality.

My speedo - checked with a known accurate tomtom over reads by about 4% or so... The cruise control is slightly more accurate than the speedo.

I questioned Ford months ago about supplying the Pirellis, they weren't interested even after telling them Pirelli don't recommend they're used at temperatures under 7 degrees centigrade. The reply came back saying all their standard vehicle range are fitted with summer tyres & I could buy more appropriate tyres if I wanted.
I didn't get a reply when I responded saying the mustang wasn't their "standard vehicle range". Touch different fitting Summer tyres to a 85bhp fiesta than a 400+ rwd car.

I'm pretty sure the V6 in the states is supplied with all season tyres.
