http://www.chemicalguys.com/Porter_Cable_Complete_Detailing_Kit_p/buf_209.htm

question is should i get it or just buy the porter cable with the back plate and just buy the pads separate i want to be able to polish and apply wax with this kit i was under the impression the orange hex-logic pads was the way to go

you'll use more than the orange pad if done right for polishing. black or red for glazes and waxes. just watch the CG, adam's, and junkman videos.

Watch these junkman2000 videos. He explains polishing quite well. He is long winded. Watch all 4.

I ordered my polisher and 6 inch backing plate from porter factory outlet.

The hex logic pads are good. Orange for removing damage. White for finish polish. and black for wax application if you don't want to hand apply.

The question I'd have about the cheap one is how far is the "throw" or orbit. The shorter the throw the closer you get to a circular buffer & burn thru.

Good ones - PC, Torq, Rupp etc. have a large orbit and you have to be hitting it pretty hard to do a burn thru.

i might pick it up instead just dont wanna burn my paint
you'd be hard pressed to burn your paint with an orbital. A rotary, however.

Even with a rotary burning through isn't exactly easily accomplished. I owned a PC 7424 for years and then borrowed a Makita rotary for a while. What a difference, way more efficient than the PC and the much larger pad diameter and taper made doing curves and edges much easier, not to mention being able to feather the RPM via trigger pull. As long as you have the slightest idea of what you're doing you probably won't burn through. If you're someone who will only polish your car once every 2-3 years and don't mind spending an entire Saturday doing it, an orbital is fine. But if you do any kind of detail work for others and want to save as much time as possible, rotary is the way to go.

I definitely would not polish your car every few months, if you are.. you're probably using contaminated wash mitts/towels on it and constantly scratching it up (which would be the only reason to polish a car), and you're also thinning your clear coat out more and more each time you do polish.
