Ok, first post... (Ill try to make it brief)

Wanted a Mustang since I was a little kid. Instead, due to multiple reasons ive owned nothing but 4 cylinder grocery-getters my whole life.

I just bought a home, with the thousands ive been saving, and I was prepared to spend the next decade with my practical Altima, which Ive only put 14k miles on in over 5 years....
Until the Bullitt unveiling ruined my life..

So ive been stalking this site, among others, determined to get my hands on this car.

Spoke to a dealership this weekend. (highly recommended to me by a friend whos family buys cars from)

Basically there are 3 guys ahead of me who have put in orders for the car. I was told they can definitely order me one, but its likely that I wont get one this summer... more likely ill get it towards the end of the year. She also made it clear to me that they sell at MSRP, with no markups...
They do want me to put money up front for the car... she said something like 5k, which Im a little weary of... but Im seriously thinking about doing it.

I feel its kind of crazy to put down $5,000 for a car I wont be getting for months. Am I an idiot if I do it?

I waited a year and a half for one of my GT350R's, so no, not crazy. It just depends how badly you want it.

If they are following Ford policy anything you put down should be 100% refundable. Most places only ask for 1-2k though. Read the paperwork about what you are putting down.

I've never heard of a Ford dealer asking for any more than $1,000 to order/hold a place in line. Most places it's only been $500, some don't even require a deposit to place the order. I'd offer 1k and see what they say (fully refundable of course).

Ugh, five minutes after I posted this she called me back and, after talking to the manager; there is a $3,000 markup... and the first 3 guys paid 5k... I dont know what turned me off more; the markup itself, or the idea that they're "giving me a deal" by only stealing 3k from me...

Thanks for the quick responses guys...

I dunno, im starting to get the sense that they're overselling the rarity of the car, taking advantage of that first wave of buyers who are willing to, and can afford to throw away a few thousand. Ive got a pretty good job, but Im not made of money...

Just wait till the car is out. There will be deals to be had then. More so after they have been on lots a bit. That is my plan.

^+1. If you're okay waiting until the end of the year, I'd be willing to bet there might even be some discounts, especially in the northeast. It's still hard to say definitively but I'm pretty sure dealers are exaggerating the rarity like your suspecting.

Wait!! I speak from experience. I paid a $20K ADM to get a 2007 GT500. Waited 7 months for the car. Five months after I got it, dealers I'd originally contacted, started calling with MSRP deals. Hard as it is, resist the urge to pay these bandits an ADM, even $3K. I'll never pay an ADM again, no matter how badly I want the car.

 Thanks

I appreciate all the feedback guys... Im feeling pretty good about being patient and waiting it out at this point.
Its a good thing they werent taking orders when they unveiled the car back in January... I was so hyped back then, I probably would have done something stupid.
Worst case scenarios: I wait to get one next year, or I end up "settling" for a 2019 GT... By then ill have a little more money saved up anyway, and Ill be making about $10 an hour more than I am now... which would more than pay for the car.

Dealers are literally the WORST part of Ford.

Certainly can be.

We have four dealerships within a 20 mile area around me.

One I will never deal with again, two I've never dealt with, and one is the reason why I am probably Ford for life.

Now Ford's issues with the RS (and other ecoboost lines) are the worst part for me.

When a dealer puts an order in on a Bullitt, how long before they get a VIN?

Nobody ordering a 2019 has gotten a VIN yet, since order scheduling doesn't start until April 19th. Production probably won't start till June.
