Saab did early experiments on production E85 turbo engines and basically came to the conclusion that the only thing you can do about the "black death" is to run normal fuel (low ethanol blends) in there once in a while to clean it out. The gumming up comes from additives in the fuel that really shouldn't be there on E85, but is not possible to be removed due to the supply chain/refining process.

Yes you'll see a tune for it. MAPerformance is in the mit getting it.
That is correct, after we finish up our intercooler development we will be doing some E85 tuning and testing out our pump solutions.

Interesting, I was under the assumption that DI engines didn't have this problem.

My Evolution 8 had this problem though, injectors had crap on them as well has the intake valves. The best solution as mentioned earlier was running regular gas through it.

Yes, great post! Gas is actually a great cleaning agent. Also the major gas companies (shell, sunoco, BP) all use detergents in their gas to further help that process.

We all learn something new everyday! Actually I believe it is more of a problem on DI engines because of the hpfp.

We have been running E85 on BMW 335i's which are direct injection for a couple years now, no issues at all with "black death" lol.

Yeah that makes sense however, I have had to do walnut blasting on a few 335s due to carbon build up :frusty:

Well the issue is is that while standard fuel injected cars have an injector that sprays right onto the intake valves, direct injection sprays fuel directly into the combustion chamber.

With direct injection my thought on the matter is that any gunk on the injector will get incinerated so build up of e85 wouldn't be possible. Whereas regular fuel injection doesn't have anything other than air and fuel to dissolve it.

Here's a picture of my Evos intake side of the cylinder head. 10k miles of pure e85 at 430awhp/410awtq. Very nasty stuff.

Yup, we do that pretty often here as well. N54's, N55's, 2.0TSI's, but never had a Ford have to come through. Either it is not an issue on the Ford, or nobody has been a whistleblower yet.

I have a Focus ST here with about 70k on it, maybe we should pop off the intake manifold....

That would be really cool to see! Maybe get a boroscope through the throttle body to save some time!
